It's because in America, the world philosopher is going to mean some old smart guy in a toga to kids. They wouldn't make the magic/alchemy connection at all if they didn't know the legend.
I still don't see why that matters. The cover art is a kid on a broomstick, reading the synopsis would let kids know it's about magic, and word travels fast. While the first book was out, most kids that heard about it probably didn't even know it had a subtitle.
