This isn't quite true, there was a william tyndale translation that wasn't the best.
It was however the first good translation of the Bible into english.




As someone who has read the entire bible cover to cover (I really do not recommend that btw, I did it just so I could say that I have) I would recommend the NIV for the old testament and probably the KJV for the new testament. I really like the NIV for the most part, but I believe there are errors in the translation, which I'm not going to get into in great detail about. However, the reading is much much easier and faster. If you want to read great lengths of the old testament where it is mostly historical instead of doctrinal, the NIV is certainly the way to go. On the other hand, the KJV is great for the new testament where I think the language used is very important to understand the doctrinal meanings of the text.

Also any other Christian writings that aren't in the Bible that I should be aware of?
