$500 is a GREAT starting point, until you realize how crappy things will look. You'll be able to play some cool games, but you won't be above medium for many and you'll want to upgrade pretty darn quick.
Sure, you'll probably want to upgrade to get the higher quality settings, but here's the thing: 360's and PS3's aren't running at ultra-high quality. They simply aren't. That's why $500, in my eyes, brings you a comparative experience. Because if it's not matching it exactly (Which it will for pretty much any game pre-2009), it will be only down by maybe a couple settings changes.
Yes, if you want a really damn good gaming machine, you're going to have to put down more than $500; probably closer to 700-800. But that's not what I was talking about. I was talking about a functioning, relatively comparable one.
