And speaking as someone who has never worked in retail, it's hard for me to conceptualize one person being that dense and dumb, let alone enough people to give Pun continual fodder for funny stories.

Pretty much everyone who has worked retail for a length of time is aware that the average customer does not listen to or read anything at all. I once asked someone if they qualified for a certain discount, had them say no, then immediately look at their receipt and demand to know why they didn't get the discount in question. Then when I told her I had asked her and she said no, she replied "I thought you were trying to sell me something". That is what retail workers deal with multiple times every single day!
