Simple, the whole country got on this whole Patriotic USA USA kick (which is a good thing) and the NFL decided to cash in on that.
Ad to the fact they had a nothing underdog QB with good looks and you get the 2002 playoffs, where the Pats* did not win on legit game. Culminating in the Patriots, the underdog plucky USA team, meeting the big evil Juggernaut Rams in the Superbowl. And because in any fair game, the Rams win by 25 or so, we got the worst called Superbowl ever.
