This being pretty much the best I can hope for. I know that Paramount ripped off the concept of Babylon 5 from JMS' pitch, but it's good to know that they end up going in different directions. It'll definitely be something that's on my list once it finally hits Netflix in, what, October or something, I think it was? (Why the hell would they put up all the Treks except the one that most people - apart from B5 fans - seem to consider the best?)

Yeah, October 1st. Well DS9 is definitely more popular among the mainstream than at least Enterprise but Enterprise is much newer; Voyager might well resonate a bit more though mainly because a common response to "remember DS9?" is "no" whereas a common response to "remember Voyager?" is "oh yeah, the robot chick".

TOS and TNG are no-brainers in the "more recognized overall" department. DS9 is the FFT of Trek, basically. Among those who have played it many say that beyond a shadow of a doubt it is the best -- among those that played it.

Also the dad thing no longer applies; just talked to him about it and we're both going to watch it on Netflix now since it's there and we won't have to buy really expensive DVD sets anymore. :p

Oh neat.

As for Babylon 5, even considering that it's far and away my favorite show of all time (well, maybe not FAR and away - close seconds are The Sopranos and, yes, LOST, despite a fair number of flaws), I am willing to admit that, the first time through, the first season of Babylon 5 is pretty horrendous. When you're rewatching the episodes it's kind of fascinating seeing what he's actually doing in those episodes to slowly build the world that the series takes place in and how necessary the information actually is, but the episodes themselves are pretty horrendous at times - and it makes it worse that a lot of them are not inherently skippable.

You definitely sound like a Babylon 5 fan! No offense intended of course; I completely agree with you. Yeah, the first season (and parts of the second) are pretty bad sometimes but the world-building is phenomenal. And you just don't realize that the first time through.

Now, I don't mean to derail this topic into B5-speak, but suffice it to say that if you've only seen first-season B5, you haven't seen the show when it's actually good, apart from a couple isolated episodes. Seasons 3 and 4 are two of the best seasons ever committed to the small screen, and 2 and (the latter half of) 5 have moments of true greatness as well - they're way up there.

Sounds about right, yeah.
