I've never played MMX, but didn't he show a clip of X shooting Vile and doing some good damage to him.
If he did, it was after he wrecked you again using his Ride Armor, just like the first fight. Then Zero takes out the Ride Armor for you, and you fight Vile on his own which never happened the first time.

That doesn't invalidate what he's saying though. You still go through the game wanting to be as powerful as Zero, hyped up for the next time you meet Vile. It's still a major driving force behind the game.
Sure, the PAYOFF may not be congruent with the buildup, but you don't know that until you actually get there.
Sorry but it does. His point isn't that you WANT to get strong enough to beat Vile, it was that you DO. But you actually DON'T.
