I don't understand the discussion. From what we've experienced, backwards compatibility is harder to achieve now and we shouldn't expect it. PS3 and 360 had bad backwards compatibility (and Wii only had it because it used near identical hardware), and it's only going to be tougher as they move forward with custom hardware that isn't like the previous console gen. Do you guys know something I don't?
It's an assumption on my part. My assumption is that digitally distributed games are a priority for MS and Sony and thus they won't tell people that all those XBLA/PSN games they bought are worthless.
I wouldn't compare digital distribution with disc games because we haven't really seen consoles handle this before.
