I didn't recognize the name at first. Then when people mentioned ninja turtles, my first thought was, "oh, the female reporter"

No, this just means you're a bad person. How do you not immediately know that April is the reporter?!?!? And, really, in the comics, she was Baxter's assistant.
And Casey is not a minor character in any way! He was in the Raphael comic that was released before the 4th Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic and he was in almost all of the movies.
