Why do you find it weird or awkward? If anything, I'd rather place my hands in the same position on either side of the controller when playing a shooter. That, to me, is more natural. Not that it matters -- my left thumb in a slightly different position is neither going to detract from my enjoyment or enhance my performance.
You're right that thumbs being in the same position is good, but insides is not - the outsides is the more comfortable part of the controller, and if both of your thumbs are on the inside, they feel too close together
that's why I'm curious about a face/right-stick swap
