The great thing about Paul is that he evolves as a character as Sinnoh goes on. Ash pretty much stays the same. Ash should have taken a hike and Paul taken the helm as the main character.
I think Ash changes his training and strategies just a little as time goes by. Imo they tried to show Ash improving and changing as Paul did - and they didn't fully succeed, but you can see what they tried to do.
