At least with Sony this sort of thing made sense from a greed standpoint since they were (and I suppose are) still theoretically trying to sell PS2s. But as far as I know GCNs are very much no longer in production. How much money could they possibly save by doing this so late in the Wii's lifespan?
I imagine it's a cheap idea to implement and it will save them hundreds of thousands, if not millions. Plus it will very slightly drive demand for the current model, which isn't selling all that much. And there's basically no negative to it. So it makes sense, it's good business, and not really "greed". Sony's wasn't "greed" either.
