How do those character transfer work anyway? Does it give me the stats of the characters in the original game?

If a character reaches Level 20 of their promoted class, and has a stat capped, they gain a bonus to it in FE10. +5 for HP, +2 for Strength, Skill, etc.

You also can get some Weapon EXP bonuses if the weapon rank is C or higher, with a higher rank being a higher bonus, IIRC.

A-Supports become "Bond" Supports in FE10, which basically means they grant you a no-cost +5 Crit and Dodge bonus (When I say no-cost, I mean you have your 5 supports again in FE10, and that bond support isn't counting against you. You could support with the same character again, or different ones and it won't interfere)

A few other things too, I know at least one base conversation can only be gotten if you have a certain A Support in FE9 transferred over, get that same A Support in FE10 again, and some other pretty crazy stuff like that. You can also get a Support Archive from FE9 for any supports you transfer over if you wanted to re-read them.

Maybe I phrased it wrong, but I meant "I can't imagine it getting better" since its already great enough as it is.

Ah, my mistake. Well, yeah, like I said, they're practically tied in my mind. If you really like FE9, I imagine you'd like FE10 as well. Popular opinion trends towards FE9 as far as I know, but FE10 is just as solid, IMO.
