Look at movies. The only things given huge budgets 9 times out of 10 are sequels and licensed material, basically stuff with a built-in fanbase. Occasionally you get something like Avatar that comes along as an original IP that shatters all records, but those are increasingly rare.


With games it's very different, I think.

Sure, you have the indie devs with all their original ideas and stuff like that, but you also have these huge publishers that own a bunch of little game studios. Those smaller studios often have great and ambitious ideas that only come to fruition with the money from the big publisher. For example, Mirror's Edge and Battlefield 3 made a lot of revolutionary advancements that couldn't have been done without EA. Assassin's Creed was only successful because of the ridiculous amount of advertising Ubisoft did, and that led to its amazing sequels. Portal and Left 4 Dead were great ideas made perfect by Valve's money, etc.
