I can't find any position I'd consider "middle" that I can hit L and R with.
Like, I can barely hit the upper c button from a middle position. Holding the wings of it feels like a perfectly natural position, and puts my fingers exactly where they need to be.

There are like zero games that require the use of the control stick and the L button. Only games that could be controlled with the D-pad used L. Games that only used the control stick ignored L, and games that only used the D-pad ignored Z. That's how the controller was designed to work, so developers could choose what setup they liked best.
I have no idea how you could have trouble hitting the R or C buttons. You're already holding the right side of the controller with your right hand, it doesn't take herculean effort to reach those buttons.
