But we also end up with things like Call of Duty 918437501892750921875 and things like Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot getting more sequels than I know of.

They've all had way more than one bad game. Three in a row should be the absolute limit before your series is killed by law. And if the publisher decides to take the rights to a franchise and give it to a new dev team (Treyarch, whoever's churning out Crash and Spyro games since Naughty Dog and Insomniac lost the rights), that counts as two strikes.
