I hope they're oversimplying it, because in America, this guy would be toast.
If by "toast" you mean he'd get three meals a day and have a good chance of being relatively comfortable the rest of his rather long life, then yeah.
Any state with the death sentence would invoke it on a guy guilty of eighty murders. Admittedly, it would depend entirely on the state, but let's be completely realistic here, he would probably get shanked even if he was in a state without capital punishment.
