Pilots are usually a good ballpark of show quality. In theory they're supposed to be the best the producers can throw at you to sell you on the show, but in practice the writers haven't really gotten loose with the characters and what works at that point. So yeah I'd agree with Cokes that they're usually not great.
Thing is I'd disagree that watching the pilot and hating it means you can keep going and likely end up enjoying the show. That just doesn't really happen. If you were like, unimpressed but not offended by the pilot I could see the show growing on you. If you liked the pilot a little I could see liking the show a lot. But I've never seen a pilot I hated turn into a show that I could even tolerate.
