Wait, did you skip all of Scratch's stuff about the ancestors, then? Most of it probably isn't...that important, but that's where it talked about the Handmaid and the Condesce's roles, and foreshadowed the Scratch and some things that might happen with Karkat later. I think it was stated that the Handmaid acted on Alternia while the Condesce worked for Lord English on Earth, but I'm not sure.
I read it, but frankly I didn't spend much time trying to figure it out. I wasn't entirely sure how it fit in with everything. In an effort to get caught up, I don't spend much time thinking over the things I just read. So if stuff doesn't immediately click while I'm reading it, I just move on and figure if it's important it'll come up again and make more sense.
