Should the Olympics go on?

https://www.dw.com/en/tokyo-2020-55-covid-19-cases-linked-to-olympics-including-two-athletes-in-olympic-village/a-58305936

The first cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the Olympic Village in Tokyo, just one week ahead of the start of the Games. In total, there have already been 55 coronavirus infections linked to the Games.

Two members of South Africa's men's football team have tested positive for COVID-19, less than a week ahead of the start of the postponed 2020 Summer Olympics.
Thabiso Monyane and Kamohelo Mahlatsi, who play for South African Premier Division sides Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows respectively, became the first athletes in the Olympic Village to test positive, while the team's video analyst Mario Masha has also returned a positive test.
"There is daily screening," said South African head coach Mxolisi Sibam, insisting his squad had been following COVID protocols. "Masha and Monyane reported high temperatures and positive saliva tests, and were then taken to do the nasal test, and they unfortunately tested positive. Mahlatsi is the latest player to go through the same process."
Organizers report a third athlete who was not yet in the Olympic Village has also tested positive, as have five Olympic staff members and one journalist. IOC member Ryu Seung-min, the South Korean Olympic table tennis champion from 2004, also tested positive upon arrival in Japan and is in isolation.
In total, organizers have reported 55 COVID-19 cases directly linked to the Games, and an IOC spokesperson said they were "relieved that all protocols were followed and that the infection was identified."
The 6,700 athletes in the Olympic Village are subject to strict rules and regulations. They must undergo daily COVID-19 tests, maintain social distancing and cannot move freely outside official Olympic venues.
"The inhabitants of the Olympic Village are the most-tested group of people in the world," said another spokesperson.

'Irresponsible fairy tale'
But the emergence of so many cases before the Games even start has attracted withering criticism from abroad, including from Germany.
Dagmar Freitag, the chair of the German government's sport select committee, told SID: "What was always going to happen has happened: 55 COVID-19 cases, and only a fraction of the athletes and officials have arrived in Tokyo."
The Social Democratic Party (SPD) lawmaker added: "The IOC is clinging on to the fairy tale of the most secure Olympic Games in a thoroughly irresponsible manner."
The majority of Germany's "Team D" was set to fly out to Japan from Frankfurt on Sunday afternoon, and Chef de Mission Dirk Schimmelpfennig saw no reason to panic.
"We knew from the outset that we have to pay attention at all times and avoid contact as much as possible," he said. "We are very well prepared with around 95% of the team fully vaccinated and measures such as daily tests, strict wearing of masks and maintaining social distance."
German javelin thrower Johannes Vetter was also unconcerned. "We have corona worldwide," he said on Sunday. "So it's logical that there will be cases at the Olympics, too. Of course, I'm not underestimating the virus, but I'm not worried."
The 28-year-old gold medal favorite said he's been dealing with the pandemic sensibly for 18 months. "I pay huge attention to the rules and to the people around me, and I'm fully vaccinated," he said, adding that the "professional approach" of the Japanese organizers has made him feel "more secure."
Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi attempted to assuage fears on Sunday, insisting: "We are keeping the risk [of infection] to an absolute minimum."

I wonder how bad it'll have to get before they decide to postpone again

https://www.npr.org/2021/07/16/1016844817/2-california-men-have-been-charged-with-plotting-to-bomb-a-democratic-building

Two California men who were angry about former President Donald Trump's 2020 election loss have been indicted on charges they plotted to firebomb the Democratic Party's headquarters in Sacramento.
The defendants, 45-year-old Ian Rogers and 37-year-old Jarrod Copeland, are both facing one count of conspiracy to destroy a building by fire or explosives. Rogers has also been charged with firearms and explosives offenses, while Copeland is facing an additional obstruction of justice charge.
Prosecutors say the two men were upset about the outcome of the 2020 presidential election and wanted to jump-start a "movement" to overthrow the government. They hoped to recruit others to their cause and even reached out to the Proud Boys to try to rally support.
Prosecutors also say that Copeland and Rogers understood that their actions would be viewed as domestic terrorism.
The two men began plotting, court papers say, three weeks after Joe Biden's election win with discussions about attacking targets they viewed as linked to Democrats.

In one exchange of messages from late November cited in court papers, Rogers tells Copeland, "We need to hit the enemy in the mouth." He goes on to say: "I think right now we attack democrats. They're [sic] offices etc. Molotov cocktails and gasoline."
The two men initially discussed attacking the California governor's mansion but quickly shifted their sights to the Democratic headquarters building in downtown Sacramento.
By Dec. 1, court papers say, the men had settled on a plan. Rogers wrote to Copeland: "Do you think something is wrong with me how I'm excited to attack the democrats?"
Prosecutors say the plans advanced over the next several weeks.
According to court papers, on Jan. 4 Copeland told Rogers that if Congress certified the 2020 election results as scheduled on Jan. 6, the two men would "become outlaws for real."
Two days later, Congress did indeed certify the vote, but only after a significant delay because the U.S. Capitol had been overrun by a violent mob of Trump supporters.

The attack on the Capitol left Copeland elated, prosecutors say. He allegedly sent Rogers a string of texts, including "REVOLUTION" "I'm f***ing juiced!!!!!" and "I'm bout to throw my gear on and drive around and punish sombitces [sic]."
On Jan. 11, Rogers messaged Copeland: "I'm thinking sac office first target. Then maybe bird and face offices," which prosecutors say is a reference to the Democratic headquarters in Sacramento, Twitter and Facebook.
"Sad it's come to this but I'm not going down without a fight. These commies need to be told what's up," Rogers adds.
"I agree," Copeland allegedly replied. "Plan attack."
He later added: "Let's see what happens after the 20th we go to war," referring to the date of Biden's inauguration.
Days later, Napa County Sheriff's deputies arrested Rogers and seized between 45 and 50 guns, including assault rifles and three machine guns. They also confiscated five pipe bombs and around 15,000 rounds of ammunition.
An attorney for Rogers declined to comment. It was not immediately clear who was representing Copeland.

Court papers say Copeland tried to delete the records of his messages with Rogers after learning of his friend's arrest. Copeland contacted a militia group leader to let him know. The leader told him to switch messaging apps and to delete everything.
FBI agents arrested Copeland this week at his home in Sacramento.
The government says Copeland poses a danger to the community and is asking that he be detained pending trial.
According to prosecutors, Copeland joined the U.S. military in 2013 but was twice arrested for desertion before receiving an "other than honorable" discharge in November 2016.
After he got out, he joined an affiliate of the Three Percenters, an anti-government militia group, according to the government.
"Copeland's membership in an anti-government militia, and his motivations for planning these attacks are relevant because they are not fleeting or the product of a single, but past, perceived affront," prosecutors say. "His sentiments are deeply felt and long-standing and reflect a believe that the government is illegitimate."

These people must really hate their freedom, to engage in activities that would result in the loss of their freedom for such a long time

https://www.wave3.com/2021/07/13/new-video-shows-girls-2015-dragging-inside-jcps-school-bus/

New video shows the terrifying moments when a 6-year-old child was dragged by a JCPS bus in 2015.
Tuesday, the civil trial against the driver and the school district began in Jefferson County Court Judge Anne OConnells courtroom.
The new video obtained exclusively by WAVE 3 News Troubleshooters is from the inside of the bus, and shows the moment when the childs backpack got stuck in the double doors. The driver doesnt notice and drives away.
The video shows another student standing by the driver as the incident occurs. The driver was later fired by the district after an investigation determined she did not watch as the child got off the bus, as required by their training

From the moment the child is dragged, which her attorneys say was 1,147 feet, the driver never notices. Another car is heard honking at the bus to get it to stop. At that point the driver realizes the girl had been dragged.
Oh my God, Oh my God, the driver is heard saying.
The video is expected to be presented during the trial.
The driver, Melinda Sanders, testified as a witness. Attorneys asked her if it was important for all children to remain seated while the bus was in motion, something she did not comply with in the video.
The child, identified as A.R. in the lawsuit, suffered severe nerve damage and PTSD, the lawsuit states. Shes had to have multiple surgeries.
In 2015, the child attended Wilkerson Traditional Elementary School. Grainy surveillance video taken by a resident from the outside showed the child being dragged.
The lawsuit is asking for an undisclosed amount in damages.

Video in link. It may be disturbing to some viewers. It isn't particularly graphic but the she's dragged for a solid 40 seconds

https://www.christianpost.com/news/pastor-begs-god-for-mercy-as-covid-19-sweeps-megachurch.html

Pastor Bruce Wesley of the multi-campus Clear Creek Community Church in Texas, which recently made headlines as some 125 youth and adults got infected with what officials suspect is the COVID-19 Delta variant after attending a church-sponsored student ministry camp, publicly prayed for Gods mercy as his church was forced to shutter for a second week.
Lord, we didnt want to be in the news, at least not for this, maybe for serving or some extreme generosity, but not this," Wesley prayed in an online message delivered to his congregants.
"So we ask for your mercy. We ask for your healing for all of those who became sick with this virus and for their families whove been caring for them as well. We pray for complete recovery so that people dont have any lingering effects, and we pray that there would be a stop, you would put a stop to the spread of this virus."
Wesley did not share how many more people are now infected with the virus. But the church revealed in a statement last Wednesday that the congregation is facing a second wave of infections among the families of the infected campers.
The number of people at camp who became ill has increased since my first communication. In some cases, entire families are sick. While some have had difficult symptoms, we are not aware of any hospitalizations," he said in the Wednesday statement after announcing further service cancellations.
Clear Creek Community Church will cancel services again on Sunday, July 11, and Wednesday, July 14 at all campuses. In addition, there will be no Revive and Restore Forum on July 11. Other gatherings for the week have been canceled or postponed."
More than 450 people participated in the camp designed for middle school and high school-aged kids. In a letter to congregants, Wesley previously explained that in consultation with the Galveston County Health District, the church canceled services for July 4 and again on July 7. They hoped to reopen for in-person services this past Sunday, but the virus cases were too many.
Our pastor, staff and volunteers, have contacted all of the 450 plus campers by phone or email this last week and weve receive a report on how everyone is doing, the church said in the statement.
On Sunday, Wesley prayed for all the families that have been impacted by the virus outbreak.
We ask also Lord for those whose lives were impacted by this virus. I know for some its been a financial impact. We pray you provide for them, he said.
He noted that some members had to rearrange their lives because of the mass infections, including those forced to miss a mission trip to the Dominican Republic or their planned vacation.
We just ask Lord that our whole community will be comforted by your presence, rest in your goodness in spite of this outbreak, he prayed.
Wesley also prayed for wisdom for churches taking their kids to camp this summer.
Inci Yildirim, a Yale Medicine pediatric infectious diseases specialist and vaccinologist, said in a recent report that the Delta variant of COVID-19 has been shown to spread more among the younger population.
A recent study from the United Kingdom showed that children and adults under 50 were 2.5 times more likely to become infected with Delta, Yildirim told Yale Medicine.
As older age groups get vaccinated, those who are younger and unvaccinated will be at higher risk of getting COVID-19 with any variant, but Delta seems to be impacting younger age groups more than previous variants, she added.
Dr. Phillip Keiser, Galveston County Health District Authority, told KHOU that because of how rapidly the virus has spread among the campers, they suspect it might be the Delta variant.
Were testing it for the Delta variant to see if thats the cause for it spreading so rapidly among that group, Keiser said.

I wonder if they ever once thought that perhaps the vaccine is from God and that disinformation surrounding the vaccine is the Devil trying to interfere with God's Will.

You'd think churches would be a strong proponent of community minded health and thinking but I guess the past 60 years have shattered that

They are terrorists and insurrectionists, no more, no less. Nothing they did amounts to treason by any legitimate definition of the word and especially not the Constitution's definition.
Engaging in terroristic actions against an active session of the entire congress of the United States by definition should qualify as committing treason against the United States.

Their mere presence disrupted the proceeding. Being part of that group makes you culpable for the action of the entirety of the group and you should be held accountable as if you yourself were carrying a weapon.

They shouldn't be able to get away on technicalities "oh I just walked through"

Mf you were in a building you weren't allowed to be in, during a time you'd never be allowed to visit, with intent to disrupt the ongoing proceedings, in order to force the congress to change the results of a free and fair election.

If some lone guy somehow broke in during a random day of congress and was without a weapon or anything then yeah, slap him on the wrist.

Every single person there was following the order of Trump to march down to the Capitol in order to 'convince' them to not certify the election. Everybody who went down to the Capitol knew exactly what Trump meant.
