It's interesting, because unlike Columbia, Penn police are regular Philadelphia police. It's a police precinct specifically for Penn, not a private security force.

Yes, that's a turbocharger. Formerly just for sports cars, they are now turning up everywhere. Allows small engines to make competitive power, but require higher (expensive) grades of gas and introduce a new failure point.

I used to have a turbocharged Subaru that would push you back in your seat when it kicked in, but my current car is not especially fast, yet it has two turbos on a struggling 1.5L engine. One just to get it rolling and another for when you actually need to merge.

Negative. I sympathize with the cause, but trashing private property, trespassing, violating codes of conduct, and really being generally immature about how large bureaucratic organizations function, is not the way to accomplish your goals.

BTW, what is that seashell-shaped thing in that same pic? A motorcycle engine?

In the middle? I think it's a spare tire (the image is complaining about cars that lack a spare). My car has run-flats instead of a spare, which would be great, except they seem to be made of tissue paper, and need to be replaced way more often than for my previous cars.

Much of humor depends on an unexpected or reversed outcome. Punching up is a reversal of the usual power structure so it enables humor. Punching down aligns with existing structures so its humor must depend on reversals like being surprised that somebody would dare say something so callous or tension regarding whether an opinion is honestly held or a character. It's weaker and riskier (and not in a good way).

https://theintercept.com/2024/03/22/gaza-unrwa-funding-congress/

The truth is that most countries already already knew that UNRWA was dirty. It didn't matter to them whether Israel was making up this particular complaint or not. It has decades of problematic history. That's why countries normally skeptical of Israel accepted the accusations immediately. They were already looking for any excuse to cut their funding. It's long past time for UNHCR, which every other refugee in the world relies on, to take over UNRWA's mission.

It's not common knowledge because it's complete bullshit. You're not "signing away your rights" as you put it, at least not at the vast majority of schools, except for maybe those super right wing religious institutions which make up less the five percent of them. And even then, getting kicked out isn't exactly a loss of rights--you wanted to go there and chose to sign a contract that you can read first when you could have easily gone to one of the majority of other schools.

Okay, fine, maybe saying "rights" is maybe speaking too loosely. The fact remains that students have very little power vs. the administration. I don't think any of them are getting an Ivy degree now. Or I should say, they won't get one without spending a lot of money on exceptional lawyers (an institution doesn't survive 250+ years with merely capable lawyers).

Anyway, here is the Columbia code of conduct, which exists:

So, you're saying they had rights before going to college, or would have more rights if they didn't go to college? That makes no sense >_>

Sorry, I thought it was common knowledge, so I didn't elaborate: Upon enrolling, students typically sign documents agreeing to certain restrictions on conduct, speech, and arbitration. Sometimes it's part of an "honor code" or "code of conduct". It basically gives the school the ability to sanction (or even kick out) a student for nearly any reason, with little recourse. Students have very little power when they get into a conflict with the administration. In other words, an otherwise legal demonstration might have serious consequences at a school, especially a private school.
