Baten Kaitos was amazing tf

The card battle system, visuals, music, and the plot twist were awesome.

The characters and storyline, on the other hand are completely forgettable. I only remember Kalas by name, along with the annoying blonde chick and the redheaded musician guy. Beyond that, everything's a blank.

Tales typically has solid voice acting, but not always, and that early it would have been a gamble looking at the difference between Legendia and Abyss there. Even if the quality could be matched by some later games, that cast was certainly unique in the realm of RPGs. Imagining Lloyd not voiced by Robin is difficult.

Wow. This is something I've taken for granted with Tales.

Thank you, Nintendo. Can't imagine that game without the voicework.

Nintendo system exclusive JRPGs have traditionally done very well because the fanbase is desperate. People rag on ToS for being propped up by that factor (which is...kinda true) but the best example is Baten Kaitos. There is no way something that aggressively mediocre sells more than 10 copies as a PS2 game.

Agree 100% on BK. That game, while unique in many regards, is extremely average. That said, I did enjoy the plot twist.

ToS, on the other hand, I enjoyed more than any of the PS2 RPGs I played before and after it. ToS had a fun factor that couldn't be touched back then.

Correct. But now that I think of it, ToS's exclusive GCN status no doubt boosted it. That was back when 3rd party exclusives actually meant something. Now virtually everything's on PC, if not every console.

It is hard to say what Symphonia would have done releasing on PS2 exclusively instead, where it would have had competition and it would not have been promoted as much.A big part of why Symphonia succeeded was because it was on a genre starved console and got an ENORMOUS Nintendo push. People that normally would never have played it even with a PS2 did so because it was on the GameCube.

That's a great point. All Gamecube had in the RPG department was Skies of Arcadia. Meanwhile PS2 had FFX, KH, Xenosaga, Shadow Hearts, etc, and backward compatibility with PS1 RPGs.

I mean that's just how the dice fell. Tales has had a lot of missteps over the years to prevent it from reaching the heights it could have.

Following up it's most popular entry on a console not known for jRPGs with one of its worst entries on a console that WAS known for JRPGS in Legendia.

Abyss right after is a masterpiece, but it's frontloaded with a lot of stuff that, incorrectly, turned people off.

Vesperia is great but was locked on a console even LESS associated with the genre, and a bunch of people missed it.

The Xillia and Graces years were heavily unpromoted, series was being treated like it was Gust tier.

They make a much bigger push in marketing for Zesteria, except WHOOPS, it's generally considered the worst game in the franchise, or second worst.

Berseria absolutely KILLS it in quality, but both the publisher and the consumers were still spooked by Zesteria and the games marketing and sales take a hit as a result.

We can only hope Arise, which has been lying low but will likely be heavily promoted and looks like it's getting a LOT of attention put into it, can revitalize the franchise. The word of mouth on Berseria is so strong that it's got some good will going into it, too.

So true. Tales is a marketing nightmare. Imagine if Symphonia and Vesperia had been on Sony consoles in the US from the start. Series would be huge. Hell, they should've released Abyss on Gamecube as well.

Metroid easily. It was the ultimate "Oh, really? The 3DS isn't dead yet?" release, considering how it was revealed at E3 and nobody saw it coming.

Excellent game too. Best 2D Metroid since Super.

Never understood why people think 3 is the best.

Does the best job of balancing story and gameplay, the setting is awesome, and the final two hours are as epic and emotional as it gets.

Honestly. As time goes on, Nintendo stays consistent while other companies either screw up (Square) or give up (Konami).

Yikes. I hate this list.

• Double-Dash should never be above 64. Never. 64's tracks were much more challenging and inspired. Other than DK Mountain, Baby Park, and Yoshi Circuit, DD was a massive disappointment from a track standpoint.
• SMK is archaic and should not be above Super Circuit (which contains all the SNES tracks anyway)
• DS destroys 7. It's not even a discussion.
• Wii should be higher. That game was fun as hell when it came out, and the online was actually decent (bonus points if you did online co-op).

It certainly boosted Smash, but there's no evidence to suggest it was a major factor. At best it probably offset the ludicrous match pic advantage that SMB had.

SSBM was *the* Nintendo game during that era. Don't forget this was back when Nintendo was kiddie, Zelda was Celda, Metroid was "boring and not enough like Halo," etc. Smash WAS Nintendo at that point.

3D World has some of the best couch co-op around.

Also, I'm not ready to overreact to today's results. Spider-man PS4 was a big deal, and it's pretty much matching ALBW's % against Smash.

Smash has had heavier competition than Odyssey early on. ALBW and Spider-man would crush Shovel Knight and DMC5.

Most people on the board visit more than once per day. The whole point of the board vote is that it's the people who care the most about voting. Why would the delay effect these voters at all?

Mario Kart is the game you buy after the Mario/Zelda/Pokemon/Smash game you primarily bought the console for. All those different audiences enjoy MK, which is why it sells so well.

It's like french fries at a fast food restaurant. Whether you order a burger or chicken nuggets, there's a very good chance you'll take a side of fries.
