The problem is half the roster is only "why" because everybody has different wants and anybody that isn't one of those wants becomes a "why." That's why there's no real choices that wouldn't disappoint "the internet," because people are always going to be disappointed if they don't get exactly who they want.

You have to admit though, nobody had Terry, Byleth, Min Min, Pyra/Mythra, and Jin at the top of their wishlists.

None of these are household names, and that's what's so perplexing about the DLC selections. You would think they would bring in characters with star power or recognizability, but 5 of the last 7 choices are people that even longtime Nintendo fans have to Google.

Not saying that there's anything wrong with niche choices, but come on.

Just throw a bunch of iconic characters in and people won't be too upset by anything. When half your dlc roster is "why" though people have a lot less patience in general

Spot on. Not enough star power in the DLC, especially in Fighter Pass 2.

Ever since Hero/Banjo, the DLC reveals (aside from Sephiroth) have been duds.

Final Fantasy IV - 5.72 (29 votes)

I wasn't here when FF4 got rated. I always believed FF4 had one of the best pre-PS1 storylines in gaming. It's fast-paced, full of twists, and boasts one of the best protagonists in the series.

Why such a low score from Board 8?

I am definitely going to pick these up for the novelty of it (and they are dirt cheap), but I've read that the 2k1 games are better in just about every way while still preserving that early feel. Thoughts?

I would actually recommend NBA 2K2 over 2K/2K1.

NFL 2K1 is widely regarded at the best, but that had a lot to do with it's online play.

There is no NHL 2K1 btw. NHL 2K2 was the last game released on Dreamcast, but it might be pricey, so NHL 2K is probably your best bet.

The games are fun as hell though. 2K Sports was on fire back then.

Yep, but when rating F3, it gets interesting if you consider exploration as part of "story." Discovering and entering a Vault is one of the most compelling parts of the game IMO--so much mystery and suspense in those scenarios.

One of the things I've learned from these topics is that sometimes it's difficult to divorce a story from the overall game.

Based on old contests CJayC ran prior to 2002, he did seem to have a thing for fighting games. Like we had Mario all on his lonesome, but three King of Fighters characters were in that bracket.

The fun fact about 2008 here is that of the three GOTY finalists, the one with the best story was the Super Smash Bros. game!

Tricky vote here. The game overall is amazing, but I have to divorce the gameplay from the story. With that said, I didn't care about the main quest. Nor did I care for the sidequests much. Nor did I like having an avatar protagonist.

Tranquility Lane was brilliant. The worldbuilding was excellent. The suspense of entering a newly discovered vault was always riveting.

So a 7 sounds about right.

5.5/10 for Bloodborne. It's got atmosphere, I'll give it that, but the story overall didn't do anything for me.

10/10 for Doki Doki Literature Club. Just finished it (got the "neutral" ending) and thought the story was brilliant. Loved the way they contrasted the innocuous anime girls with the horror elements. Loved how meta the game was, and how it still managed emotional impact when the girls' depression was revealed. Is the true ending worth another full playthrough or should I just YouTube it? No spoilers please.
