Here, however, Worf is a victim of his own values. He's incapable of ignoring this problem and he suffers because of his own decision. This is the kind of tragedy I like.

The great irony of Worf is that he's a Klingon raised by human parents. Those parents cared enough about him to make sure he learned as much about his culture as possible, but he never actually had any Klingons around to learn how that culture works in real life. It's like a human child was adopted by aliens and was raised solely on stories of Golden Age Superman and Captain America.

The result is that Worf, raised on the myths and legends of his people, is more-or-less the exemplary Klingon.

Shit, Yesterday's Enterprise and The Offpsring are back to back? Stacked couple of episodes.

Hell, looking at the next half dozen or so, all of them are pretty good.

He's absolutely trolling, I don't know that I've ever seen him make a post that's not just giving his terrible Star Trek opinions.

I did like this episode for having a non-humanoid race, that's such a rarity in Trek.

And you noticed Wesley's extremely tiny role in this episode. Fun fact: that was an extremely fucked up power play on behalf of one of the producers. Wheaton was cast in a movie called Valmont which was filming in Paris. It was being made during TNG's summer hiatus, but shooting would extend into TNG's first week and this was the first episode to be made. The producers told his agent that they absolutely could not write him out of the episode because it was Wesley-focused and it'd include a scene between him and McFadden that would move their relationship forward and be really important to the series.

So he doesn't take the role in Valmont and then they write him out of the episode entirely.

It's probably a really silly idea, but I always liked the thought of the token non-human character in a new Trek series to be a swarm of those nanites replicating a human shape joining a starship's crew.

Probably be tough to write around though.

I remember really disliking Riker (and Picard to a lesser extent) in this episode. The two senior officers on the ship just openly dismissing the idea that they need to practice military exercises when they've already encountered multiple situations in which they might need those exercises.

Pulaski, on the other hand, was probably at her best in this episode.

Unlike every other episode CassandraCroft told you to skip, no one would blame you for skipping Shades of Grey. It's just garbage. Possibly the worst episode of Star Trek. It offers nothing other than the experience of having said you've seen the worst episode.

True but Worf does at least get some development on TNG. I almost consider O'Brien more of a DS9 character than a TNG one, he's just a background character there.

I'm betting not. There was an episode of DS9 in which they planned for a leprechaun to be part of the story. Meaney had enough pull by that point that he told them he was absolutely not going to do that.

Gomez is a panicky little motormouth. Cute, but there's not much else. I actually expected her to die, the way this episode is set up.

That discrepancy is because Gomez was meant to be a recurring character that'd become a love interest for Geordi. The issue is that she was kind of a bumbling annoyance and neither she nor Burton were told about these plans, so they didn't play it romantic at all.

And if SFDebris is to be believed, in that scene where Q is in the meeting room with Picard and Riker, the script called for Q to make an over the top threat when Riker talked shit to him. De Lancie was the one who went with just quietly going, "Oh, please."

I quite enjoyed the episode tbh.

Guinan's good throughout the show but I think the subtle, manipulative way she convinces Picard is her at her greatest.

Luckily for Data that this episode made it clear that the Federation won't enslave artificial life. Yeah, they'll never do that.

That episode is actually kind of a retroactive plothole. Later episodes and shows establish that due to the Eugenics Wars, the Federation firmly forbids genetic engineering. That entire station should have been arrested.

Yeah, it's hard to imagine Starfleet personnel being pointlessly bigoted towards artificial life.

I think this is probably because the Borg were initially conceived to be an insectoid race, but the budget you'd need for that would be astronomical. You can see the idea carried though though, as the Borg still possess a lot of hive-like characteristics.

Man, this is one episode I don't remember at all.

I do really admire the decision to have him be the Klingon who seems to most understand the actual philosophy behind their culture. Its far better than flat out angstily rejecting the whole thing.

You're quite good at analysis. The first major Worf episode and you've picked up the core pillar of his character. He is, in many ways, the ideal Klingon because he grew up only learning stories about his culture. It's like a human only learning about Superman and Captain America, then thinking that's how all humans act.

It did not. No one's did. Roddenberry insisted the uniforms be made out of spandex and extremely tight so it'd look more futuristic. The end result being that they stank and gave Patrick Stewart back problems.

Even after they fix the issue, Stewart keeps adjusting his shirt. Apparently it would be uncomfortable if you sat down in it. He does it so frequently that fans call it the Picard Maneuver.

As for the Ferengi, unlike with the original Klingons, I don't see anything intentionally or lazily offensive about them. Rather, it seems to be an unfortunate combination of having a race of ultra capitalists (which, given how the main cast announce that they're beyond it any chance they get, reads more as an exaggeration of American excess than of Jewish caricatures)

Yeah, I understand why people think they're Jewish stereotypes, but they came across to me as 1980s American stock brokers more than anything else.

Oh, it's good that you like her, some people absolutely loathe her. I see that you're familiar with some of her roles already, but I don't know if anyone's mentioned or if you noticed that she also plays the Enterprise's computer.

I don't know if there's any truth to this, but the first two or three seasons made me feel like they intended Riker to be the "main" character the same way Kirk was in TOS. Picard would be the captain but he'd be more of a mentor role, relatively in the background.

I've been following along on production trivia as I go and apparently this is the last attempt to make the Ferengi a credible threat. While they clearly don't have the raw power and presence of, say, a Klingon or a Romulan, I still think their scheming, slimy ways makes them dangerous. There was a bit of silliness and mugging in their first appearance, sure, but I find them alright as mostly serious villains. I mean, here, they're actually great.

They were very much conceived to be a replacement for the Klingons as a recurring threat. IIRC, there's even some mild build-up where they talk about them long before they ever show up. But then that first episode, man. Their design is just a little goofy to begin with, then their mannerisms made it even worse.

It's also hard to take them seriously as a threat when they still think gold has value in the age of replicators.

Yeah, I've heard good things about them too. The only ashes I've really used are the Undead Militiamen and the Mimic Tear. Tbh, I think I prefer my zombie boys.

Yeah, Tiche was going to be my backup plan if it really wasn't happening, but the worst thing was that it kept feeling like it could happen lol.

I tried Comet Azur once in P1. She immediately dodged it and slapped me in the face, so I didn't do it again lol.

I probably don't have the stats for it to have worked anyway. Even with the mana cheat and buff flask, I still only got her down to about half health in P2. She starts at about 80%, so I only did roughly 30% of her health bar with Comet Azur.

My dudes, I am happy to say that after probably seventy-eighty attempts, I got gud. My hands are still shaking and I feel like I'm having a mild cardiac event, but I did it. No ashes, so major cheese, no leaving to grind levels and coming back. I don't even think I got super lucky, she used Waterfowl and Aeonia at least twice in the final run. All I had to do was completely abandon nearly every aspect of the playstyle I've done the rest of the game and specialize specifically with her lol.

Instead of my Moonveil/Rock Sling strategy that I've typically gone with, I swapped to Hoslow's Petal Whip with a Bloodhound Step cold infusion. The only sorceries I used were Rock Sling, Night Shard, and Comet Azur. If I'd had a bit more mind, I'd have gotten rid of Rock Sling too, but as it was I'd have enough for a full mana bar worth of Night Shard with exactly one Rock Sling left over and I hate waste. Comet Azur was used solely in the phase 2 transition's Scarlet Aeonia with the traditional mana cheat and mana buff flask.

I didn't even use the Bloodhound Step. I kept hearing about how useful it was on this fight, but I was just really bad at using it. I don't think it really saved me at all whereas it directly killed me multiple times where I'd Step into Waterfowl or Aeonia. I just stripped down to an Ivory-Draped Tabard and Rennala's ridiculous but +3 intellect hat for the light load roll.

They fucking lied to you. She is essentially broken compared to every other Boss in From Soft HISTORY since Stagger was introduced as an idea. She CAN'T be staggered if she is performing a move with Super Armor, this is counter to EVERY OTHER ENEMY IN THE GAME.

Saltiness aside, this was probably the most helpful advice I could have gotten. I've heard the phrases Super Armor and Hyper Armor but not really thought about them. I thought Malenia was staggering based on some kind of poise mechanic which made it semi-random. This post made me realize that it wasn't randomness, she wasn't being staggered due to the attack she was doing. This meant that I could just be very aggressive when she was doing her posturing and be on the defensive when she was not.

Maybe it's just confirmation bias, but I started seeing the same thing after you said this. And that made me realize that she doesn't seem to rush in and do it. She will do it in melee range, but you have to stay on her. So that again meant I could be a little more aggressive instead of running whenever I felt Waterfowl was off cooldown.

I think I still veer on the side of the healing being a little overkill, but I ended up thinking she's a great boss. And after feeling a little bad throughout the game for seemingly having a relatively easy time, it feels pretty good to beat the apparently hardest boss in the game with no "cheese" strategies.
