Nah.

A lot of the worldbuilding in the OT isn't obvious anymore because Star Wars was so successful that everyone copied it and it turned into a cliche. But the galaxy it designed that you got a glimpse of through the costuming, the set design, the spaceships, etc. blew people away.

There's so much that's going unsaid but is absolutely adding to the feeling of living in that world.

So a publisher has the right to reproduce any and all existing works with no obligation to reimburse the author? That's what you're arguing. Creating copies might be a negligible process, but the perceived value added to the final product beyond the physical cost of paper and binding comes from the contributions of the author.

It's impossible to argue that they have that right, since they don't. The laws are pretty clear on that.

I would like to move towards a system in which that is the case, though, yes.

I'm not arguing for the traditional publishing model. I'm arguing for a creator having the right to negotiate reproduction and distribution rights for their work regardless of the model being used.

The question you asked was the incentive to pay for a story without securing the rights to reproduce and distribute. I answered it.

If you want to talk about an author's right to negotiate said rights, that's a different conversation (and I disagree with you).

OK, so you've got a "unique story." Where's the incentive for someone to pay for it initially if there are no limits to reproduction or distribution? For that matter, what are they even paying for if not right to publish and distribute?

Well, first of all, publishing and distributing is still valuable. At present, you can find just about any book for free if you look hard enough and the publishing industry hasn't collapsed. Again, people like buying books.

But in a hypothetical world where this breaks down and the norms of paying for books have broken down completely, yes, nobody would want to pay for the right to publish and distribute. You'd pay for the opportunity to read a story that otherwise wouldn't be written. Inkshares is already experimenting with the business model of crowdfunded books with a print-to-demand model instead of traditional publishing. I think this has the potential to become much bigger than it currently is.

On the more extreme end, there could be, in rare cases, a return to patronage.

And then you have authors today who make all their content free and support themselves entirely through sites like Patreon, with exclusive perks for paying customers.

To;Dr: The trad publishing model is outdated but functional and will be for a while; there are plenty of other business models that allow for profitable publication that could fill the gap, and will only increase in popularity.

This isnt an agreed to disagree thing. You made a factually false statement. Creating a product is labor. You deserve the ability to barter for the price of that labor. People should have the ability to accept or decline that price.

You deserve the ability to barter for the creation of a book (labor). Once it's written, creating copies is a negligible process that anyone can do (not labor).

Forced artificial scarcity is a cancer.

The post was wrong. Yes, having music available can help boost sales, but there's no hard evidence that it does. Some people like having books, but many people strictly do ebooks, either because they don't care or don't have space. You also claim releasing Warbreaker got him popularity and boosted sales, but I've seen zero evidence of that. Sanderson already had a huge fan base - hell, he'd just been chosen to finish one of the biggest fantasy series of all time. And most people who read him likely don't visit his site, and don't even know its available free. A better example would be when he released Way if King's on Amazon free for a period and heavily advertised it, bringing interest into the start of a series. But the rest of his stuff was still charged for, while IA is just offering everything free with no control or restrictions.

Ultimately, we don't know whether Warbreaker's sales were overall hurt or helped. But we do know it didn't sell poorly.

And I dunno, if the average reader doesn't go to Sanderson's website, maybe they aren't scouring the internet archive either.

Are you an author or in another creative field?

But you havent presented an argument why authors dont deserve the option to decide for themselves whether their work is available for free

That's a different conversation and one I'm more sympathetic to.

Ultimately, I come down more in favor of the spread and free use of intellectual property, but it's fair to value an author's control of their work more than I do.

I don't feel like you've been couching your argument this way, though.

The problem is that spreading it for free means the people that work extremely hard to produce it don't get paid, making it harder for them to continue their work. Many of these authors are already working a second job, because writing pays terribly especially when you consider the lack of benefits from a traditional job. There needs to be a balance between open availability for consumers and financial support for creators, and the internet archive completely ignored that. It's less that what they're doing is illegal, more that they knowingly poked a bear and refused to step down until publishers were forced to step in.

So did you just like

No, he isn't. Tons of authors are against it because it actively hurts them.

It doesn't hurt us as much as they think it does. It makes instinctive sense to think it's hurting us and I used to believe that, but I looked into it and my conclusion was that counterintuitively, having your books available for free can boost sales.

Brandon Sanderson made Warbreaker available for free. It didn't stop anyone I know from buying a copy, and it got a bunch of people into his books. Here's his statement on the matter. I think there's a follow-up statement talking more about the success of the experiment, but I couldn't find it quickly.
https://faq.brandonsanderson.com/knowledge-base/why-release-warbreaker-for-free-on-your-website/

Like it's scary to think that your work is just up there for free and nobody will ever pay for it again, but people like buying books. They like having them on the shelf. They like supporting authors they like. The fear is overblown.
