I knew from the beginning that I was not doing science fiction. I was doing a space opera, a fantasy film, a mythological piece.
-George Lucas

Note here that Lucas also seems to consider space opera a separate genre from science fiction.

It's not really an interesting question. It's just a way to group up movies in a way that people are familiar with. Which is handy when people would browse shelves of movies or books or whatever. Go ask regular people what their favorite Space Opera is and nobody will know what the hell you are talking about.

It's really not that complicated or serious. Like I'm not going to go complain to the clerk that Army of Darkness is in the Horror section even though it's more like an action horror comedy. It's just the obvious group to put it in.

Subgenres are a thing if you want to get more specific but it's not needed for the majority of people. Hell a lot of the time sci-fi and fantasy are grouped together because they serve a similar audience.

I mean, I find it interesting but to each their own >_>

For the purpose of sorting, it would make sense to put things where people expect them to be. i.e., if enough people expect to find Star Wars in the sci-fi section, put it in the sci-fi section. For a store optimized for giving people new experiences, I would argue that it does make more sense to stick it in fantasy. Fans of traditional sci-fi, I predict, would would be less likely to enjoy Star Wars than fans of traditional fantasy would be.

And when you want to talk about stories in a more academic context -- track the evolution of a genre, examine an author's influences, etc., I'd much rather define genres more strictly. By intended purpose, commonality of tropes, etc. But again, I find this stuff interesting.

I'm 100% on board with that last sentence, though. In fact, in a lot of these hypothetical video stores, the section of store we'd be looking in would be "sci-fi/fantasy", with no delineation whatsoever.

I copy/pasted a wiki section about defining science fiction and gave my opinion on the purpose of genres, both of which you elected to ignore in favor of being snide.

Then I attempted to ignore you and you kept snipping at me anyway until I took the bait.

I'm not really sure what you're trying to accomplish here.

What exactly do you think is the point of having genres

This is actually a very interesting question, and an entire conversation on its own. I don't think there's an inherent "point" to having genres, other than the human mind naturally seeking patterns and coming up with terms to standardize discussions of those patterns. Everything that follows is just a result of that basic instinct. I'm not saying that's empirically true, but that's my quick take on it.

I'm going to be charitable and assume that your argument is something like "popular opinion determines genre"? I'll wait on you to confirm, but I'm having trouble finding another way of interpreting you that makes sense.

I didn't answer because it's fucking irrelevant.

I assume the answer you're looking for is the sci-fi section, as if the categorization of genres is determined by where overworked employees concerned for nothing but their bottom line place their movies.

If this is the point you're basing your argument on, I'd find a new point.

that's just a more wordy way of saying sci-fi

See, this is wrong. Science fiction and fantasy are two genres, though there are similarities.

These are difficult concepts to discuss concretely, so I'll just copy/paste the wiki relating to the definition of science fiction, which itself acknowledges how goddamned difficult it is... but just because it's hard doesn't mean we should be lazy and say sci-fi and fantasy are the same genre with different backdrops.

"Science fiction" is difficult to define precisely, as it includes a wide range of concepts and themes. James Blish wrote: "Wells used the term originally to cover what we would today call "hard" science fiction, in which a conscientious attempt to be faithful to already known facts (as of the date of writing) was the substrate on which the story was to be built, and if the story was also to contain a miracle, it ought at least not to contain a whole arsenal of them."
According to Isaac Asimov, "Science fiction can be defined as that branch of literature which deals with the reaction of human beings to changes in science and technology."Robert A. Heinlein wrote that "A handy short definition of almost all science fiction might read: realistic speculation about possible future events, based solidly on adequate knowledge of the real world, past and present, and on a thorough understanding of the nature and significance of the scientific method."
Tom Shippey compared George Orwell's Coming Up for Air (1939) with Frederick Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth's The Space Merchants (1952), and concluded that the basic building block and distinguishing feature of a science fiction novel is the presence of the novum, a term Darko Suvin adapted from Ernst Bloch and defined as "a discrete piece of information recognizable as not-true, but also as not-unlike-true, not-flatly- (and in the current state of knowledge) impossible."
Lester del Rey wrote, "Even the devoted aficionado or fanhas a hard time trying to explain what science fiction is," and the lack of a "full satisfactory definition" is because "there are no easily delineated limits to science fiction." Author and editor Damon Knight summed up the difficulty, saying "science fiction is what we point to when we say it." Mark C. Glassey described science fiction as U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart described pornography: "I know it when I see it."

Bear with me here.

First off, his appearance. There's no way that came about in any way OTHER than some bored kid fucking with the character creator sliders and trying to make the most ridiculous creation imaginable.

Second, what he says... or should I say, his dialogue trees. Again, the person playing this game is probably some bored, edgy kid trying to pick the worst dialogue options possible for shits and giggles. A lot of it is exactly what an immature teen would say to try and derail the conversation. However...

(Third) the game world bends over backward for him to keep him from failing, no matter how many stupid fucking decisions he's made. Dude fell upward into the presidency. That's gotta be a scripted event. It's like the Earthgame equivalent of Link fishing for days while Hyrule waits on you -- it is impossible to fail so hard that you actually lose. And the guy 100% knows there are no consequences either.

Finally, this explains his total lack of empathy. None of the people he interacts with are real, and he knows it. This also explains why he's so unabashedly hot for his daughter -- there's no actual familial connection besides the backstory the game forced on him.

Conclusion: we are pieces of data in the most sophisticated video game we can possibly imagine, mere entertainment for a more advanced species. And the particular member of said species controlling Trump's avatar is having way too much fun.

Nope. Cis or trans are fair game for bisexuals. Thats just some BS biphobia shit. Bisexuals and Transgender are not exactly the most accepted members of the LGBTQ community. so its just something that causes/tries to cause friction between these two groups.

Pansexuals are not attracted to gender/sex and isnt what determines there sexual attraction to someone.

Bisexuals ARE attracted to people based on gender/sex.

Just about all the bi people I know would be pissed at the implication here that they can't be into trans/nb people

And the trans ones would be pissed at the implication that they're so different from other people of their gender that you need a whole new sexuality to track attraction to them.
