Cool Hand Luke

It was a very well-shot movie and I enjoyed the writing! Similar to what John said, I love the positive masculinity and it was really refreshing to say. There might be some gay stuff in there but I honestly just was into the idea of this really healthy, masculine friendship that got them both through.

I wasn't really anticipating watching it, but I judged way too quickly. No profound insight.

9/10

Yes I've watched The Lobster three times lol

And yes, so far I've seen The Lobster, Dogtooth, The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Favourite. All good! Though I liked Dogtooth less than the rest

I've seen the above movies once each. I rather liked Dogtooth tbh. My favorite I think is The Killing of a Sacred Deer. He's wonderful and uncomfortable.

Perfect Blue

Hoo boy, this is definitely one of the creepier movies I've watched lately. All the elements flowed together well (even when it seemed like a jumbled up pile of nonsense). Movies rarely make me feel uneasy or deeply uncomfortable, but this one did it for me - combining the slow loss of sanity with two of the most horrifying looking animated characters (Rumi and Me-Mania) I've ever seen made me a babble-y mess (John is incredibly patient, I give him personally a 10/10). I don't have anything to add that would make my interpretation seem profound or anything, i just really dig movies that give me an emotional response like that.

also i s2g independently of you all rating it a 9/10, i was going to rate it a 9/10. But not on the upper end of 9, like John. Just a solid 9.

so yeah, 9/10

I've seen It's Such a Beautiful Day like 4 times straight through and I love it and appreciate it so much that I'd absolutely be willing to watch it another time.

The Love Witch (2016)
In full disclosure, John and I specifically didn't talk about this movie so we could see each other's thoughts uninterrupted.

Elaine is an incredibly captivating, beautiful protagonist, and it feels like in a way she basically seduces the film watcher as much as she seduces the men around her. I enjoy the director/writer/producer/costume designer's vision for the movie, definitely done in a way that views Elaine's sexuality as empowering, past the point of really caring what the men truly think about her. She kind of reminds me of that one tiktoker, Chrissy Chlapecka. It's incredibly charming.

Some of the writing took me out of the immersion, as well as the stunted dialogue and somewhat awkward pacing. It took a long time for me to really get what was happening, but Elaine captured my attention the whole time. (Well, and the harp player. And the witch leader lady?). This film had its pros and cons, but the more I think about it, the more I enjoy it.

yeah i think it became quickly apparent that this was not going to happen because nothing could live up to the expectations.

what movies do you two feel the most differently about?

also when we first started, i asked everyone about their top 10 movies. any idea what that would look like for you?

there aren't really any genres that we're black and white about, just things that he leans toward that I don't, and vice versa. I'd say our taste in shows is a lot different (I love trash tv, documentaries, YouTube projects, etc.; he'll actually like watch acclaimed shows on his own). I think the biggest thing remains in what sticks with us. For some reason, after seeing "First Reformed", I couldn't stop thinking about it and its themes, whereas it didn't impact John as hard. He likes romance movies a smidge more than I do, and he's more willing to watch movies just to watch them. I have to actually kind of be interested in the premise. Though I'll watch all movies up for nominations here.

My top movies include American Beauty, Whiplash, Midsommar, etc., I really enjoy slow-burn indies (like The Florida Project) and arthouse horror; I'd say those types are generally my favorite. I also really enjoy just dark, gritty movies, or movies with imperfect protagonists (I'm Thinking Of Ending Things). I like when movies can jar me in some type of way, like All That Jazz, or the Killing of a Sacred Deer. I'm mainly impressed when the writing is good and the acting seems thoughtful. I hope that's descriptive enough!

I'll basically watch most things though if they seem interesting enough.

I typed out something long and then my page refreshed and it was gone. Rip.

Stalker (1979)

In short, the movie had a lot of build up with little reward; the slow scenes where the men sat there in existential dread/however they were feeling rarely were powerful enough to make me feel like it was worth the anticipation. The men themselves felt more like archetypes than dynamic, flowing, independently thinking characters (symbolic, though too much so that it took away from my feeling of immersion). There were some very neat themes and I love the concept of the Zone and its wonders. I do like that they made it so far and then were like, nah, nvm. There's power in that, and many of the themes this film had to offer (getting one's true deepest desire, importance of the journey and not the destination, etc.).

I especially liked the ending, when it took the story away from these three men and focused on the Stalker's family. The wife speaking directly to the camera was a powerful move and I fully admired her perspective/the perspective she brought to the film. Sure there's this all-encompassing zone that gives the Stalker an altruistic meaning of life, but there's lots of life to be had in not pursuing one's ultimate true goal, too. And sometimes you settle, and that's okay.

I would watch a whole movie about the Stalker's daughter and not think twice about it. She's neat.

Overall, eh? Maybe I'm just not smart enough for the movie. I enjoy it for what it is, respect it for inspiring so many other beautiful works of art, etc., but I can't say I'm left with much of a lasting impact.

7/10 (promise i'm not just rating it what John did, lmao)

When Marnie Was There

I caught on pretty quick that Marnie was some type of non-worldly person, and then with the blue eyes I quickly figured she was family. That said, I found Anna to be a somewhat hard-to-like protagonist at times, the "fat pig" comment was pretty rude, her constant self deprecation was a lot at times, and she "Jennifer-Lawrence'd" her way through the movie, falling at every second she reasonably could. This movie has a lot of heart, though, and I love the undeniably queer love Anna felt (even if it ended up not being uh, the wholesome thing), and Marnie captured me from the beginning. All in all, a pretty movie, very good story telling, characters were mostly believable; it's got a lot of heart.

8/10
