Blizzard is reports that the average concurrent live viewership for the OWL finals was over 860,000. This includes all streaming platforms worldwide including China (Twitch, MLG, PandaTV, NetEase) and linear TV (ESPN) combined.

A few things. This includes streaming and prime time ESPN. This also includes China.

This was the inargural season (1st ever season) of professional Overwatch. This is my first Esport I really got into. I heard other Esports pull numbers that make this look small. However those are really popular and well established Esports. 860,000 still sounds good but China might be heavily inflating those numbers. I don't know how hardcore China is with Esports.

So.. is an average viewer count of 860,000 for the Season finals good?

It's a hard one. Look at games like Conan Exiles, hell even No Man's Sky. These games released as a fat diarrhea with nothing there and are nearly decent now.

Follow it up with the AAA scene and it's a total shit-show. Destiny/Titanfall spend years getting decent (with plenty of dlc along the way) and then immediately unlearn all their lessons as soon as the next game drops and start the cycle over.

So like everything else, it's case by case. Stop rewarding the proven swindlers and start rewarding the ones who genuinely want to improve.

What about Ubisoft? They seemed to go out of their way in recent years to fix their games. Rainbow Six Seige, The Division, Tom Clancy: Ghost Recon Wildlands, For Honor, etc.

For some reason, I really want to give Ubisoft another chance out the gate because they fixed so many of their games. It's seems weird with them. Should Ubisoft fall under the umbrella of the other AAA developers?

I'm sure many of you know... There is a certain trend that has been happening within gaming. Games have been released in a terrible, and unfinished in some cases, state. This is terrible for us gamers obviously.

Lately though... Developers put a lot of effort into fixing their game and making it pretty darn good. Sounds like a great job by developers right? Yes and no.

Here is the dilemma... It's awesome that Developers don't give up on their game. They work on it even after all the backlash and make the game pretty darn good. Players then come back. However... what if this becomes a trend? What if it's already a trend? Developers release a game that isn't ready. They grab all your money from the initial purchases then fix the game at a later date. That shouldn't be a thing! It should be fixed out the gate!

The problem is... you can send a message by not getting involved again with games that do this to you. You can move on out of principle and send a message that it's unacceptable to release games in that state to begin with.

However... doing that sends another message. That message being that it isn't even worth investing and fixing your games after it's released because players won't come back anyway. So scrap the game and work on something different.

Both of these are bad for the gamer. Which side do you land on this opinion? Do you want developers to fix their games and support them when they do so or do you stop supporting that game all together, even if they fix it, to send a message that it's not acceptable to release games on that state?
