honestly I kinda agree with this, I'd definitely be a bit disappointed unless the game experience was just really really good

Unfortunately the reality is that this is squarely on the developer.

it's on the players for abusing the refund feature and on steam for monopolizing the market to such an extent that it's near impossible to sell games elsewhere and then having very anti-small-dev practices

the point of refunds is refunding things that don't work, that weren't what you expected, or maybe that you really didn't like. they're not supposed to be used after you finished the game to get it for free...

If I was a game developer and I knew that Steam's refund policy allowed anybody to get a refund essentially no-questions-asked with less than 2 hours of playtime, I wouldn't release a game that lasts less than 2 hours on their platform.

this is kinda the unfortunate truth

unfortunate because it's near-impossible to sell games to anyone if they're not on steam

which means it's not really a solution to anything, just a fact of life and steam sucks

it's literally falling apart, I can't really close it anymore, the touchpad, windows key, and page up/down are broken, the wifi antenna is broken, the ethernet port is broken, it's missing a few pieces of casing and the power cable has been reconstructed from a bunch of spare wire and some electrical tape

but other than that it's working great

I dunno what to think about this really. I've actually quit a military-adjacent programming job in the past in large part because I was uncomfortable with the stuff I was working on and the general atmosphere of the place. so I can definitely understandd uncomfortable feelings. but it's also sort of unavoidable since advanced tech in basically any area tends to get immediately vacuumed up by the military

I wonder if there are any existing software licenses that explicitly prohibit military use

Denpa Shnen (January 1998 March 2002), a Japanese reality-television show on Nippon Television, after winning a lottery for a "show business related job". I have a great aunt who is super secretive about what her job/profession was. whenever people ask her about it she says she did cartography / surveying sorts of stuff and then just very quickly changes the subject, but she doesn't really have any tools or odds and ends that I'd associate with someone who'd worked at that for decades and then retired. she never tells any work related stories or really talks about her past in general. she's lived alone basically since she was grown up and is really rich with this super fancy house that's way too big for just one person

basically my entire family is at least 50% suspicious that she actually worked for some secret government agency

I watched someone stream part of it somewhat recently (their first time playing it) and there was this one section in fungi forest that really jumped out at me as the perfect example of this + just general laziness with level design. I don't think I can explain it purely in words so here's a little diagram


two rooms connected by a tunnel. the green doors are doors that require chunky to shoot a switch to open. the purple dots are small bananas for tiny.

1) the bananas don't match the doors despite being in between two of them

2) the tunnel is shaped in such a way so you can't see you also need chunky on the other side until you walk through (I sure hope you didn't go back to tiny after opening the first door)

3) whoever placed the bananas clearly wasn't paying attention, or placed them before the gates, since they're all evenly spaced out, but the final one is on the opposite side of the 2nd gate

pots are actually not random. fire temple is full of magic pots because the devs realized you needed a lot of dins fire (or fire arrows) but after you get magic from a pot it will just be empty unttil you leave the dungeon or save+reset

well, you also become much much more powerful through failed runs. which is probably my biggest dislike about the game, there's so much strength locked away in meta progression that to me it felt less like I was getting better and more like "well yeah of course I'm winning now I have an extra dash and 8x as much hp"

the trick to appreciating NES games is realizing that most of them are not very good. so don't even try those. and then the ones that are good, you have to be willing to accept a fair amount of bizarre design choices and old game jank to like them

honestly I'm pretty sure you could find every NES game you like in a day or so as long as you're willing to aggressively drop the bad ones
