I played Pheonix Wright 1 in Japanese not too long ago. I have a basic understanding of the language. Either I don't know enough to the point that the jokes went over my head, or the original script was quite a bit drier than the English version. I'm guessing a combination of both, I think that localization team was remarkably talented.

Considering the types of jokes in the english version (a lot of name puns) I assume the jp version jokes would be sorta hard to catch

.bat files are essentially just a list of commands that you could type into a command prompt. sometimes they'll have variables, or loops, but all the commands that actually act on things are just command prompt commands. You can open them up in notepad or any text editor and just look at all the commands and look up what they do. So while it's definitely possible to make bat files that do bad stuff (command prompt is a powerful place, especially running as administrator), you can look up any suspicious looking commands online to see what they do before you run it.

contrast with say, an .exe file, where you can't tell at all what it will do without special decompiling software

the .bat file just group moves and renames a bunch of bgm files it's completely safe

unless you have an attachment to the old bgm files since it overwrites those but that's it

back when everyone was talking about it I was annoyed how it just seemed to be everywhere since I didn't care about it at all. and then there's just constantly people screaming about "oh this is going up" or "watch out this is going down" or etc etc. so I looked into how to buy some and put a little bit of money into it because I figured it would be more interesting seeing all this and watching it go up and down if it at least had some relation to me

turned out it didn't really matter since the big start of year crash was right after that and that made everyone stop talking about it anyway lol

I dunno why it's still listed as an alpha / early-access game because it's been in dev for like 4 years now and already seems to be more of a game than a lot of things that are actually finished and released. they just keep adding to stuff and changing the version number but it's always still alpha versions for some reason

Take Musou/Warriors games. Thousands of soldiers die in every single battle in one of those games, yet no one really addresses it and it's all the hero characters speaking to each other as though they're the only people involved in the fight and all the soldiers are just blades of grass they're cutting down. Which they are, if you follow what the game wants to imply in its tone.

there's a trick to cutting them that makes you cry a lot less, basically you want to cut the root (the bottom part) as little as possible. if you're trying to dice one up into small pieces, cut it in half first: https://files.catbox.moe/e1hi72.png

then do this: https://files.catbox.moe/4viv4d.png (note, not all the way through to the root, so it's still on one piece)

you're left with a little around the root which you can try to trim off if you want, I guess. this both makes you cry less and also just makes it physically easier to cut since it holds itself together until the very final step

Hard to tell what's "real" vs what's ridiculous because this is my only focused exposure to the language so far.

from my experience it's generally meant as a sort of stilted / less natural speech and is commonly used for foreigners since they can't speak as well? although there's definitely some level of caricature to it because it still happens sometimes when the rest of their speech is entirely normal.

robots also sometimes have this, or even more annoying just talk 100% in katakana.

also yeah most jp pokemon names are pretty lame

I enjoyed it most of the time while playing but I feel like part of this was due to having a fastforward function. Looking back on it I definitely see it in a more negative light than I did at the time

it's one of those games I never want to replay since I'll inevitably end up just completely souring on it

the biggest downside of digital in my mind is the inability to do anything with the game other than play it. it's hard to lend to a friend. it's hard to resell. it's hard to display as part of a collection. it means the game won't come with any cool extras usually.

ultimately though I still think digital benefits outweigh physical benefits and I mostly prefer digital stuff nowadays
