i think the timing was always going to be screwy. like if they met only a few years or less after Geoff's experience, he could have mentioned it in passing but she doesn't feel comfortable pressing further because it's his trauma and the thought that he would open up when he's ready. but years after, why do you want to bring that subject up, if you haven't forgotten about it? and i don't think it would have even crossed her mind years into their relationship because she's convinced (even if he hasn't outright stated it) that he's moved on because their relationship is going so great.

another thing about Marnie was that it was based on a British novel which I'm assuming played into the decision to make Anna not full Japanese (blue eyes, foreign references, etc.).

i read the plot summary on wikipedia and it seems mostly similar if that was accurate. Except that in the book, Marnie marries her literal cousin(?) and Anna only has the interest in sketching in the movie.

i literally just sighed out loud early on when within like 10 minutes our 12-year old main character just says "I hate myself." partly because i could just imagine the rest of the runtime being about whatever silly little problem children have that don't mean ANYTHING and partly because i've thought that for so long from around that age that i just did not want to revisit it in any capacity, even through a movie. but then she starts talking about the asthma and feeling like a burden and i was like 'oh fuck, this is me'. Well, not the asthma. And then the adoption stuff came up and it was like 'oh so it's not like me at all' because she has like, reasons. But the 'feeling like a burden' part I'm very familiar with and for an extended period of time, i just felt guilty for eating because in my mind, it was taking away food from somebody who was actually worth something. Even the part where she talks about finding out her guardians get 'paid' I could link to similar thoughts I had, but as I mentioned in earlier posts, while completely understandable why she thinks that way, she's missing the perspective that she'll have later in life. I'm not saying this is a character flaw or anything, but rather it actually makes her even more relatable and is a particularly important character moment.

As far as some other stuff...they REALLY laid it on thick with the possible romantic overtones? like that rowing scene or them just constantly telling each other they love one another. i was wondering about possible cultural differences like how platonic love was expressed and even Anna's androgynous character design plays into it. so i was like whatever but then the end happens and it's just funny because it really is love.

It's very pleasing visually but it's inevitable that I'll always compare new anime I see to the ones that just push the medium completely (even other Ghiblis!) especially since there WERE fantastic/supernatural elements here they could play with. Overall good.

yeah i remember that line. pretty sure she's talking about non-foster kids because how many foster children does she even know to directly compare situations? i kind of mentioned this earlier but it's completely understandable why she thinks that way because she's not factoring in all the additional costs of raising a child and if she's only thinking about the payments, it might seem plausible on some level that they took her in for profit. but yeah i also agree with your earlier point that it seems kind of out of the blue and it seems like one of those things that they just don't fully explain for the sake of the movie's characters.

i did a brief search and it actually seems like the norm. all the search results that came up for my area (California) mention monthly payments. but (and i thought this with Marnie too at the time) it's really not like they're "getting paid" to take the child, more that it's assistance because taking care of children is fucking expensive. whatever they receive, i can't imagine they cover ALL costs of food, clothes, other expenses, etc. and even if those monthly payments did, it's still taking up your TIME. like if you're talking about net finances, there's no way you would come out positive for taking on a foster child.

i never watch dubs for anything because i always want to hear original language so my take isn't based on exactly a lot of experience but they always sound off and weird to me. i checked out a couple spots here after finishing the movie and same thing

how much of the feh playerbase has even played 6/7? it seems kind of crazy to ask considering it was literally the first western release but i see the results of polls and CYL and things like that and i've always been more inclined to think that a majority are supercasuals concerning mainline series or literally got into the series with 3H. Awakening was probably a big entry point for a lot of people too i guess but 7 is nearly a 20 year old game that was only ported once to Wii U.

also like how many of them have even played 9/10 considering it's never been ported and a copy is like $200 used at this point.

also Marcus is kind of boring i guess and even has the exp hog reputation among casuals. he doesn't even have big tits

Hunt for the Wilderpeople

First Taika Waititi I've seen. i found out the kid was the same actor from Deadpool 2 and i was hoping that he would be like a completely different character here because he was really obnoxious in Deadpool. but like...he's almost playing the same character and instead it just becomes clear why he got cast for Deadpool? or maybe they worked in the same characteristics after the casting?

Like the first 40 minutes I was not really into it. I thought it started picking up after they'd been on the run for a while but by the last 20 or so minutes I was just bored and waiting for it to end. lot of jokes and visual gags that I just didn't find funny and I kept thinking about other movies that handled similar themes/moments in a way I preferred (it wasn't Up either). i think i might just be a depressive fuck.

l watched this for the first time in 2013 and it's still great but i was considerably less engaged rewatching it. idk why. maybe it has to do with the show, or my mood.

fucking car salesmen, am i right? imagine being Jerry's kid and finding out your father was such a massive piece of shit. earlier in the movie, his grandfather says that he'll never have to worry because they're loaded but he ends up losing his father/mother/grandfather by the end. and his biggest problem before that was getting Cs in school and hockey. fucking hell.

there's actually a moment right after Jerry/father-in-law/Smithers discuss the kidnapping/ransom for the first time at the diner. as they're going their separate ways, Smithers asks Jerry, "Is Scotty going to be all right?" and the look on Jerry's face/reaction is totally "oh shit i completely forgot about my son" lmao. and when Buscemi's character (after getting his ass beat by Shep) calls him in the last stretch, Buscemi's character says "i'll shoot your fucking wife and all your little fucking children" and Jerry's response is like the least-panicked "oh you leave Scotty alone." (father-in-law is listening in). Now if this was a "real" kidnapping and he hadn't met the guy before, assuming the kidnapper did not know additional information, he has voluntarily divulged that 1. he has one son and 2. his son's name is Scotty. if Buscemi really decided to carry out his threat, it's not like that information would have been hard to find but he's still giving ANY extra information to the guy who presumably kidnapped his wife and is threatening his entire family. i mean, yet another pathetic piece of shit character named Jerry i guess lol. the scene right after the kidnapping where you hear his torn-up voice and then the reveal that he was REHEARSING breaking the news to his father-in-law just really adds that extra slimeball layer to the character on top of all the obvious shit. great performance.

also i thought it was funny how the guy who says the least throughout the movie was the one who ended up telling the whole story to Marge at the end.

was definitely thinking about Bardem in No Country while watching. and lol Macy and Buscemi kind of have the same feel? like their eyes or something.

Admittedly I still don't know what to make of the Yamagita character. I've read different takes, some think he's just to provide a sense of realism because his scene is so random, which feeds into the 'based on a true story' teasing. Sounds plausible, I'm more persuaded by the reading that his erratic behavior indirectly makes Marge more suspicious of Jerry's. The scenes are back-to-back so there's a logic to that...although I still don't get why Marge couldn't just directly be suspicious of Jerry to begin with.

yeah i pretty much accept the latter at this point where it makes her realize Jerry was lying about the car. She's naturally trusting and "good" so she takes what Mike and Jerry say at face value. only when she finds out Mike was lying does she consider that Jerry could also have been lying.
