I'm not sure I'd like an entire album of this type of music, but as a standalone track, it offers me the darkness I like in a package that is at the right level of intensity

i kind of get it because while the album is great atmosphere for the mood, i for sure return to the opening track the most

this is certainly a better reaction than the last time i nommed this in a song ranking topic and i was told i made their eardrums bleed or something to that effect lol

that contrast/shift is absolutely my favorite thing about Deafheaven. i don't remember if i mentioned it before but with Dream House, the following track on the album is a more calm one evoking that similar type of feeling and it just transitions seamlessly

this is an interesting reaction because all the negatives you mentioned are pretty much why i love the song. the unapologetic crassness of the lyrics and the abrasive attitude just make it really memorable. and tbh if i had to pick a 'least favorite' moment of the song it would be the bridge which you mentioned as being your favorite part because that's when the song's tempo slows down and i just want nonstop spitting

also interesting you mentioned not thinking of it as 'club music' because there is a pretty well-known(?) scene from the Bling Ring where they are very much dancing to this song lol

i was trying to think back to why i nommed this and i remembered it was because at the time i was impressed that the members actually learned how to play the song on instruments amid their transition/exploration period from girl group to band. not the most polished sound in live performances considering their relative lack of experience but i just thought it was fascinating watching a K-Pop group even try that type of concept

(First Reaction: If only I'd found this song a few years ago... I was obsessed with vocal distortions and I think the harshness of the instruments & distorted vocals would have made this a big hit then. I'm not as into those things now, but I do kinda get it; the music is slightly oppressive (though not to the overwhelming level like some Minotaur Shock songs) and it's a distinct enough experience that I'm not as bothered by the repeating lyrics, but my reaction is more "that was kinda neat!" than a rave review. Still, neat.)

yeah i'm pretty sure i included this because that preference long ago is what i remembered. i do get into moods where i'll listen to the same song for an hour on repeat and this type of track is what it ends up being sometimes. just so haunting and comforting in those type of moods.

iirc i tried to avoid videos for all my noms because i at least wanted that first listen/impression to be purely audio-based.

i think the video for this is certainly memorable but i wouldn't call it "the most fucked up thing" or whatever. partly because i think it's more funny than anything and also the part that i'm assuming is the reason most people call it fucked up is 2007 cg-based

also their videos are like impossible to find in good quality on youtube. like if you search for it now all you get are reaction vids. just looking now the only decent link i could find is an unlisted video uploaded by a random user

one of the things i like the most about this band in addition to their funk metal style is that everyone does vocals and the mix of both masc/fem vocals is like one of my fav things in music
