It's just really good writing compared to how the writers did Zhao in season 1, losing to Zuko very early in the season and always being a jobber who just kept upward advancement from that moment on.
Zhao is meant to be a jobber. He's literally there for his job, not his birthright or family, which is a major theme for all the other characters.

Also the game seems perfectly tuned time-wise-- the 22 minute time limit always felt about right. I can't imagine how much playtesting had to go into this.
It's a game that just couldn't be made in less than the 7 years they had. I wish they would pump one of these out every year, but it wouldn't be possible. Or maybe it would. Majora's Mask was made in just 1 year after all. But what I think it comes down to is that these games can't be mass produced. We just have to appreciate and savor them when they show up.

Also I wonder if the 22 minutes idea came from TV episode length...

After X amount of hours in this world, slowly learning about how the loop works, there's no way you won't feel the massive dread of that last mission. It's a brilliant magic trick that you WANT to fool you.

MrSmartGuy posted...
I dunno, I feel like if you aren't feeling horrendous dread while navigating the Bramble without a lifeline, then you aren't playing the canonical way.
This didn't happen on my final mission, but the first time I got to the ship on the inside of the Bramble, I lost my ship on the way. The fish attacked me in just the right way that it completely split open my ship, and left me barely alive, floating in the detached cockpit. Took me a few seconds to look around and realize what happened (good thing I always wore my suit inside). So I finished the trek using my jetpack, which quickly lost fuel. I got to the ship and was just frantically rushing in to investigate, and lost all my air right before getting to the room with the trees.

Even though I knew I go back there really fast in the next loop, it felt so dire.

I thought all the Code Talker stuff was just the right balance of serious and camp that classic MGS is about. And the tapes are kinda fine too, since like you said in PW they were good. And MGS4 was mostly codec too.

But something about the combination of everything in MGSV ended up being worse than the sum of its parts.

I def enjoyed the generic missions and combat a lot more in XV than MGSV, but both got tiring fast. XV had enough twists in each chapter to keep the gameplay fresh.

Story is hard to say. There is nothing to compare XV's story, so who cares if it's unfinished and you just get some cool anime bro scenes. That's fine.

MGSV is entirely familiar(ish) characters in a universe you're already deeply steeped in, in a series that is known for story before anything else. The lack of story is so glaring that is shines through every line of interaction, every line of dialogue, every silent minute you spend trekking across the desert. Each fulton gives you a split second of joy, enough to forget what you're actually playing. But as hard as they tried, there are not enough fultons to really fill the void left by the story.

Oh yeah you often have to kill yourself. But there's always easy ways to do that.

This kind of passive game does have a big risk of the player missing some key elements and getting overly frustrated. It's amazing how well they polished that out, but it's def still there. I think it's worth it to make the game possible.

MSGV is also unfinished, but the key difference is there is nothing to MGSV. No pathos, no narrative, no novel mechanics. There's no indication that, given 10 more years, they would've made a legendary game. It failed at things MGS2 and 3 nailed 15 years earlier. There's 1 awesome 30 minute mission in the whole 60+ hour experience.

XV is full of novelty though and will leave a mark on the industry (already has with how much 7R took from it).

The game is just completely unfinished. It makes no sense to compare it to other games or to play it like one. There's absolutely no way it can be "good" from that lens.

So I like to think of it like a museum, a tour through an incomplete game that had an immense amount of effort and creativity poured into it. Because that's what it is. A tasting menu in JRPG form. It's over a thousand devs scrounging up over 10+ years of experiments and set pieces, and sharing it with you. It has a serious "behind the scenes" kind of vibe to it.

And it's really awesome. Some of the stuff they manage to achieve in this game is on a whole nother level compared to other JRPGs. I'm not sure if it could be done in a complete game, because they clearly couldn't do it, but seeing it work for real in these bite size chapters is enough. It's just really inspiring.

They do completely nail the beginning and ends of the game though, so you leave it with a really good impression no matter what. It's just the middle is all disjointed.

The whole point of S5 is that Walt massively let his guard down, since "he won" in S4. If Hank didn't figure out the WW on the toilet, it would've been something else. If Jesse didn't figure it out from Huell, it would've been something else.

Personally no.

Globally I don't think so, there were some during the heights of the anti-terrorism wars that were worse, showing absolutely no hope for the future. At least the current disasters have a sense of progress and future attached to them. The death and violence is more visible and harder to ignore, which is a good thing, and does not mean it's worse than before.
