Yes they are generally connected by the wiring when the electric was run. The battery is most likely the nuisance alarm, basically your back up battery is low and needs to be replaced.

The service request. Assuming its a tile shower with the soap holder? The issue may be and they dont want to bother is the backer board/wall need to be replaced. Such a pain in the ass. If I were maint/mgmt I would rip out the tile and put in just a standard fiberglass surround and call it done.
