1. Beat a game released before 1990

Dragon Quest

I was looking for some mobile games that weren't just endless runner/puzzle stuff and that didn't require an internet connection to play on my commute, and remembered that most of this series, of which I've never played, is on Android so I figured I'd finally play through it. I liked the shorter length and simplicity of this one as opposed to the first Final Fantasy (which is a great game), however I did resort to a guide a few times to save myself what seems to be hours of padding from the developers by making the flow of the game convoluted. It feels like 50% of one's time with the game involves figuring out where to go next (with 45% reserved to grinding).

On to DQ2!

19. Beat a platformer

Spyro 3

Trilogy complete! Every time I start this game, I wonder why it isn't my favourite as the first few levels are great, and then a few hours in I realize that all of the extra characters control very poorly, the level design isn't as great as the second game, and a lot of the challenges are incredibly annoying. In all my previous playthroughs this wasn't enough for me to not 100% the game, but this time I couldn't handle it anymore by the third world, and so I did what I needed to do to get the platinum and beat it.

28. Beat a game with the supernatural as a central theme

Devil May Cry 4

I am now ready for the new game after playing through the entire series for the first time (mostly) in the last few months. This one had the best, and most, story of the bunch, which is kind of what I was looking for as someone whose main goal was to familiarize myself with the lore before the new game, but the game play was also very good in this too. Dante was hilarious and had me laughing out loud at a few of the cutscenes. Fun game overall!

16. Beat a rhythm game

Amplitude

I figured out last night that this was cross-buy with PS4 on PS Plus this month, so I downloaded it and played a whole bunch of it yesterday and this morning. Just went through the campaign on medium, time to see where my skill cap is.

24. Beat a game with romance as a central theme

Florence

This is a very short mobile game about a relationship that makes excellent use of the platform. I hadn't even heard about it until watching/reading Giantbomb's GOTY content, but it might be in my top 5 games of 2018.

35. Beat a game with a lead that's from a fictional species

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (PS4)

The original game was #10 on my 'Top 100 Games List' I did a few years a ago, so I had high expectations for this game to deliver on everything that the original did, and it succeeded for the most part. As with the first game, it looks great, plays great, and is faithful to the original, which is all I wanted. The one spot that it isn't as great, though, is in the voice acting where a bunch of the voices have been changed. In almost all of these cases it was because the original voices were "bad", but there was some charm in the awfulness of them and that same charm is missing here.

It's also my first platinum of 2019!

I'm really heeling it up out there.

Can't escape XIII's shenanigans even in another company.

The second page I hit on TV Tropes was "Bleak Level" so I'll go with that. I'm sure I'll find something this year that features something bleak. Posting it here so I don't forget later.

37. Beat a game that's been in your backlog for a long time

Transistor

Supergiant Games has become one of my favourite developers over the last five years with Bastion being great and Pyre being one of the best games I played in 2018. I've owned Transistor since it was given away on PS Plus back in 2015, but kept putting off playing it for some reason. After seeing Supergiant's new game Hades at The Game Awards I figured I should finally play Transistor, and really liked it!

I don't think that we can be friends if you are going to badmouth Codemaster's racing portfolio. And I just saw that you admitted you haven't even played them!

I've heard good things about the Dirt and F1 games, and did play a very very small amount of Grid 2 actually which was okay, but pre-2010 does not look great for them!

12. Beat a game made by a developer you've never tried

Onrush

First entry! I really liked the concept and innovation that this game brought, but it got a little stale by the end as I struggled to remain interested enough to finish the campaign. Maybe if I spent time in the online or playing with friends I would have found it more fun throughout. I actually had trouble finding a spot for this game until I looked through the developer's games and found about a hundred bad sports and racing games that I've never played.

Tag.

I'll have a bunch of entries to add over the next few days. Instead of doing my usual thing of playing one game at a time to completion, I started playing a bunch of games in the last week so I have 3-4 that I'm over halfway done.

I don't know if I'm ready to write a segment just yet, but it is nice to see my character not jobbing out anymore!
