Why did the north want to abolish slavery? To take away the money and power of a growing threat to greater unification under a single banner. Brothers and sisters fought each other in the civil war and nobody kills their family over social justice. Slavery is a red herring. It just happened to be the catalyst of what caused a power struggle between two sides and it just happened that africans were the slaves of choice at the time.
