I teach in Philadelphia, so it's a huge district with teachers from nearby counties, Jersey, Delaware, and other places. I'm pretty much expecting this, they send us in people start getting sick and then we get shut down again.

I work in a small district in a very rural area. There are only 1100 students in the whole district in two buildings that are right next to each other.
There haven't really been that many confirmed cases in the area either so it's hard to tell what will happen when school gets going again.

How do you feel about the prospect of teaching in person this fall?

I am pretty unbothered by it.
I teach somewhat older kids who won't just walk up and hang on me like kindergartners.
It will probably be pretty easy for me to just teach from my desk and avoid close contact with people.
I am also arrogant/optimistic enough to believe that even if I catch COVID-19 I won't die. My fear of catching it is spreading it to others, so I will still do everything in my power to prevent catching it. For the most part I don't really interact with that many people. But I may have to avoid seeing my parents as often.

What's your school/districts plan?

Mine has several ideas floating around atm, but none seem to be great. There was discussion of doing 9th graders on Monday, 10th graders on Tuesday, and so on. There was the idea of A weeks and B weeks, where kids would alternate coming in and staying home.

Still a lot to be decided but:
Back to school like normal.
In person classes 5 days a week.
Staff required to wear a mask.
Students required to wear a mask sometimes (on bus), but not at all times.
Probably a lot of changes to limit large groups, like assemblies and stuff.

All districts in the county are on the same plan and following the county health department. Our school is actually starting two weeks late cause of construction so we can see how it's going before we start.

I predict things will run smooth until those first couple positive test results come back then who knows.

Last school year wasn't a waste. Even with in person schooling being stopped when it was we still got 3/4 of the year in.

When it comes to the upcoming school year I have no predictions or expectations. Nothing would surprise me.

I think the damage done learning wise is worse in younger kids. Those still learning basic skills like reading and basic math are going to be harmed way more than freshmen in high school.

As long as you only share the zoom link directly with your students and monitor the room there really aren't any security concerns. We use Google for everything else so switching to their video conferencing would probably make sense though.

Do you think complaining is part of teacher culture?

My wife is a teacher and yes, the job is hard. My job is also hard, I have to literally climb mountains and see dead people bleeding into the 6ft deep snow with heavy weights.

But I don't get to say "I have the hardest job in the world you don't understand!" And every teacher I've ever known thinks that about their job, including my wife. But they also CONSTANTLY complain about how hard it is and is going to be.

Teaching brings with it a bunch of unique problems and stresses that other jobs don't have to deal with. Because of that I think teachers often vent about their issues because they want to know they are not alone in what they are dealing with.
I personally try to limit my complaining and never complain about things that I have no control over. Like other teachers might complain about them setting testing at a certain time or something, but I don't worry about that at all because me complaining won't change anything so I just deal with it.
