WoD wasn't panned because of the number of raid tiers.

It was panned because they cancelled the end of the expansion and there was no content except for daily quests for 18 months.
you guys are taking me so literally :(. it was panned because of a lack of content/patches, including raids. there was supposed to be a middle tier in shattrath that they ditched

even at the time blizzard called brf part of the launch raid set. this was before people noticed how short & easy highmaul was and/or that highmaul didn't have a raid set.

https://www.reddit.com/r/wow/comments/2vw2b9/hm_brf_thats_all/
https://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/1730749-Raid-tiers-in-WoD

blizzard has been slowly decreasing/weaning our expectations over time.

i think wow is healthiest when there are at least two current raids available. one that is easier, introductory, and outgearable with currently available gear, and another that is meatier, more challenging, more complex, and cannot be outgeared with currently available gear.

this is one reason why many 'mid-expansion' raids are so often lauded. They get to be more complex, and the casuals can still enjoy rolling through the raid's content. Ulduar had naxx, icecrown had ToC, firelands had bwd/bot, throne of thunder had msv, BRF had highmaul, nighthold had EN, battle for dazal'alor (apparently), etc etc

When the relationship is reversed- the current 'top' raid is less complex than the tier below it- no one runs the previous raid and things start going sour. The ToC -> Ulduar patch is quite possibly the clearest example of this.

Basically, that's why I think it's important that expansions feature more than 7-10 bosses within a couple months of launch

redrocket posted...
Why did they cancel the end of WoD anyway?
according to the general fan understanding, blizzard rearranged some expansions and rushed out WoD to try to synergize with the warcraft film's release. when the film itself was delayed (replaced the director, who then threw out the script, among other things) the devs kind of gave up on the expansion and just started working on pumping out legion as soon as possible.

i'm not sure what the real reason was, but i remember the moment that the fans realized what was going on- it was "the twitter patch"- if they had called given "Patch 6.1" a different number, like "Patch 6.0.4", they could have kept the ruse going. But having the biggest feature of the first 'major content patch' being the ability to directly post your screenshots on twitter inflamed the playerbase.

So in conclusion, the typical launch tier consists of 17 bosses.

Over the past few expansions (Mists, Draenor, Legion), Blizzard had intentionally been giving the first half of the initial raid more and more time to breathe before opening the gates to the second half, which I actually somewhat agreed with.

But by the time BfA rolled around, the gap was too much. They finally flipped the switch and snipped off the second half of the first tier, moving it into its own 'tier'. Dazar'Alor clearly could have been that second half. Uldir was not a fun launch, and frankly I lost interest and unsubbed before the next raid came out

I have to apologize, I think we might just have a miscommunication. I'm talking about the total launch content, rather than the literal first raid you can enter.

Ever since WoD and maybe mists, blizzard has intentionally been staggering the release of launch raids over more and more time, eventually getting to the point now players are defending a launch with only 10 raid bosses.

If another raid comes out within 2 months I will retract my claim.

Emerald Nightmare was 7.
Emerald Nightmare combined with Nighthold was the first raid tier of Legion, that's 17.

Highmaul was 7.
Highmaul combined with Blackrock Foundry was the first raid tier of WoD. That's 17. The main reason WoD was so panned was because there were only 2 raid tiers.

Mogu'shan vaults was 6.
This is silly. Launch tier was Mogu'shan Vaults + Heart of Fear + Terrace of Endless Spring. That's 16. HoF and Terrace 'officially' launched like 1 week after MSV.

Cataclysm had the most launch raid content.
Remember that the first tier was split among 3 different raids- Bastion of Twilight, Blackwing Descent, and Throne of the Four Winds. That's 13 bosses. So if you're going to call Cataclysm the 'largest launch' you have to allow other expansions to count multiple

Naxxramas wasn't even a new raid.
Agreed. It was an old raid that 0.1% of the playerbase had even entered, and the mechanics were lightly updated. The tier was Naxxramas, Obsidian Sanctum, and Eye of Eternity, which totalled 16 bosses.

Burning crusade didn't launch with full 25 man content, 4 bosses and then a full 10 man raid.
I didn't raid at the start of BC, but my understanding is that Burning Crusade and vanilla raid tiers were a little different. They were launched all at once and gated by quests and gear rather than timed releases for the most part. If you want to discount 10-man raid content that's fine. However, karazhan is a fan favorite raid of all time, and I would feel terrible not counting it. Gruul's Lair + Magtheridon's Lair + Serpentshrine Caverns + Karazhan = 21 or so

I'll give you vanilla. I didn't play at the time and it's not an expansion

red13n posted...
Uldir was 8 bosses.
Honestly, I kind of skipped BfA because it wasn't fun. It looks like you're right. So i retract calling Shadowlands the 'smallest' set of launch raid content, but congratulations, it's the second smallest, second only to the second most recent expansion. It's not a great trend!

I'm sort of holding out hope that another raid will come out soon. But given that they had to delay the expansion's launch because they weren't finished, I don't have high hopes.

As consolation, and as I said, it's still a great raid.

the movies are immensely boring. i tried to give the films another chance about a year ago, and it blew my mind how boring they were

it didn't help that the fight scenes in both movies felt hollow. yeah, the highway scene was technically impressive for the time but there was no dramatic weight to it

stepping outside of everything else, it was a dumb decision to nerf Neo so hard. He went from being God at the end of the matrix to... idk... a good fighter that can fly. They should've made him ridiculously overpowered in the matrix and put all of the drama in either the real world or how the machines handled him by changing the matrix

overall, this just seems like it's just a new risk you assume or have to accept when becoming a parent

if your kid gets hit by a car on the street in front of your house, sure i guess you can say it's "bad parenting" for not properly watching your child 100% of the time and not perfectly training them on how to cross a street (and inculcating the mental discipline to always remember what to do), but at the same time if we were able to make cars safer, we would

Heroic Bigpun posted...
Okay i know I'm a caveman but what the hell is Ray tracing. I thought it was a person at first

in traditional graphics, during every frame the code goes through and draws each object (an object is something like a character, chair, car, wall, etc) sequentially. there are all sorts of tricks to figure out generally which objects are in the scene, how close they are to light sources, whether they're in shadow, etc, but a lot of them are heuristics. they generally draw the objects in the back first, then draw the closer ones on top of them. this is different from popup- popup determines whether an object is close enough to be counted as in the scene at all. rendering is after that

with ray tracing, instead of drawing each object in the scene sequentially, the code goes through each *pixel* on your screen and shoots a 'ray' out of the camera in that direction. when the ray contacts a surface, it bounces off of that surface using certain algorithms to see what else it hits. You can increase or decrease the number of 'bounces' based on whatever you want. If the object is a literal black hole or perfectly matte and black object, the ray won't bounce at all. In the end, the final 'color' of the pixel is calculated and that one pixel is drawn on the screen. It goes through and calculates this for each pixel

Glossy surfaces like mirrors are extremely reflective, while matte surfaces aren't. If you have transparent materials like glass or water, ray tracing can trace the light bending through those, too. This ray essentially 'picks up' colors, intensity and attributes from every surface it hits

So obviously this creates great mirrors and great reflections on glossy, curved surfaces. But another aspect that's important is how well it picks up ambient colors- materials you normally don't think of as reflective are in fact partially reflective

If you have a white piece of paper and hold it up to a white light bulb, it'll appear white. If you hold it up to a yellow light bulb, it'll appear yellower. Something you'll also notice is that if you are in a well-lit room, shine a light on a red book cover, then hold a white piece of paper next to that book, the side of the paper facing the book will also look red. The 'red' of the book reflects off of the book, reflects off of the paper, and hits your eye, so the paper appears red. Ray tracing is really great for that

source: i wrote a (non-real-time, but hyper realistic) ray tracer in college a long time ago

i imagine ray tracing in games uses a bunch of shortcuts to allow it to work in real time (shine's video above showed some obvious ones), but that's generally the gist

tl;dr
normal rendering == each frame, draw objects on top of each other on the canvas until none are left
ray tracing == each frame, draw the color of each pixel based on the physics of a 'ray' shot out from the camera, until there are no pixels left

Aside note, my apartment's microwave is bullshit. After it finishes, it beeps every ten seconds until i pay attention to it. This is not necessary for a microwave! The only reason it's necessary for kitchen timers or washing machines is because bad things happen if you don't turn off the oven or you let your clothes sit in the dampness. Dryers never do this!

A microwave automatically stops shooting microwaves when the timer is up, there's nothing more that has to be done immediately

i didn't read it at the time, but i knew what satire was

ironically, as i've gotten older i've been less kind towards (anonymous) satire. there have been multiple people (comedians, internet posters, etc) i was so sure were being satirical, but ended up being straight up actual nazis.

satire doesn't work on the anonymous internet. it works when you know and have a relationship with someone- you have a baseline of knowledge about what they actually believe, so you can understand the humor in context

i thought for sure /r/the_donald was satirical for a long time, but then Charlottesville happened. the subreddit/forum was eventually banned for hate speech and organizing to kill police. ten years ago i thought everyone on 4chan was just like me and only horsing around. it's been proven that isn't the case

long story short, don't be unhappy when anonymous people won't take your anonymous shit the way you want them to!

probably 5th or 6th.

it's not a bad console, but it had fierce competition at the time. if your only console was a GC when the PS2 and Xbox were relevant, it was kind of sad

i'm happy to see people have already suggested L-block/snake/sonic/squall. i think that was when we all collectively realized that the contests were on the ramp and about to jump the shark

subsequent 'joke' characters- and repeat L-block entries- weren't entertaining, as we'd already heard the joke

i wouldn't put it as number one, but i think it deserves to be somewhere in the top 10

Shadow was super lame when introduced, but I've come to appreciate him retroactively

There's something truly beautiful about a character taking unironic over the top edginess to 11 while still being safe for kids

Knuckles is the more believable character for sure

sounds like this is going to be another ghostbusters 2016/the last of us 2

there will be legitimate complaints about the game, but those topics of discussion won't have as many (much?) legs as the political perspective

i suggest everyone who isn't in the mood to pointlessly yell at clouds to hit the eject button on the discussion immediately

play it if you want, who cares

i'm not a big mcdonalds fan, but i do miss being able to customize their snack wraps. at least in my area, the last time i checked you could only get fried ranch wraps, whereas back in the day i was a fan of the grilled bbq ones
