RPG mechanics really don't add to narrative - it's usually just something that exists parallel to the story rather than integrating with it.

Or when they do, it's in the form of the choices you make to build your characters influencing how the story unfolds, but that exponentially increases the amount of writing needed, often beyond what smaller studios can realistically accomplish.

Atlantis feels like it should have been like an hour longer. They had so much potential for interesting worldbuilding and more meaningfully developing Atlantis, but instead everything about the story after they actually arrive in Atlantis just gets railroaded through a really straightforward plot with an obvious twist that doesn't end up meaning much of anything. Given how much research and lorebuilding went into it, I can't help but suspect that the team wanted to do more but Disney didn't want to make a longer movie and force them to trim it down.

That's a bit of an odd way to phrase the question. My most pressing debt is my credit card bill, in that the interest rate is much higher than anything else and I pay it off as soon as I can, but that's not a debt I carry long-term. I pay it off every month, such that in the entire time I've had my cards I've paid a grand total of like 70 cents in interest because I forgot to pay it on time once. My largest debt is my student loan, but that's not very "pressing" in that it's zero-interest and I just keep making slightly more than the minimum payments on it (when they took the interest off of the federal part, I just adjusted my payment to match what I was already paying with interest for the sake of bringing the principal down a bit faster). Otherwise, I bought my car outright, have no medical debt because Canadia, and the only mortgage I pay is someone else's.

"Poor-adjacent" is a bit of an exaggeration, but you're also not into comfortable financial territory yet with the current state of the economy. It may help to start tabulating your finances in more detail, trying to break down exactly how much you're spending on different things, what your monthly cash flow looks like, and some projections for what your savings/investments might look like in a year or two's time or what kind of catastrophes you could handle (like if your car died tomorrow). If you only have a vague idea of how much wiggle room you have, it's pretty hard to be confident that you have it, so by more precisely quantifying your financial situation you can reassure yourself that you're in a safe position.

Of course, this can easily spiral into obsessive bookkeeping and coming up with more and more outlandish ideas of financial catastrophes you might end up needing to prepare for, so if you find yourself doing that, maybe take a step in the other direction and quantify your finances less thoroughly. If you know that you are in fact in a reasonably comfortable financial position, trying to quantify exactly how comfortable may create more stress than it alleviates, such that ignoring it (while not being an idiot about your spending, obviously) may help you feel better.

If it has night vision with an infrared emitter, a retroreflective vest will dazzle the hell out of it. It won't do anything for daylight or passive IR.

A laser pointer can also dazzle a camera. Since most cameras attempt to adjust for brightness, the super bright laser beam will cause the rest of the image to become extremely dark.

When I worked for a company that made video surveillance equipment, I toyed with the idea of embedding IR LEDs into a hat. Most cameras detect IR the same as visible light, and if you can produce enough IR, it might mask your face.

Nifty. I guess it does make sense that they can't be totally defeated by a shiny vest, since that'd make them pretty useless. Lasers dazzling them is expected, but not altogether practical unless I'm planning to attack a specific camera (which I'm not), but the IR LED idea is an interesting one. Any idea what that would do to collision detection features in cars?

But you're also a sucker whose inexplicable obsession with company loyalty is being exploited by people who are all too happy to have you work uncompensated overtime, as are the coworkers whose work you're doing for them so they're free to slack off. You're not really in a position to criticize anyone else for not having a backbone.

Anyone working 40 hours should expect basic livability for that. Period. Working more than that should be a choice one makes to accumulate spare income faster, not a necessity to have a roof over one's head.

Also, reverse image search is telling me that that infographic is from 2013. The original source is 404'd, but there are a few contemporary articles discussing it that mention specific figures, such as the Fair Market Rent for a 2-bedroom apartment in Massachusetts being $1251/month. So the modern situation is actually considerably worse than that image suggests.

It also doesn't help that most employers aren't the ones making record profits and actually benefiting from the inflation, so they aren't actually in a position to be able to compensate for the cost of living increase. It's the greed of a relatively small number of people driving much of this, at the expense of everyone else.

How about parents actually parent instead of making the government do it for them?

Because corporations are constantly pushing the envelope as far as manipulative advertising goes, with children being a particular target for that because of how malleable they are. Keeping up with that to such an extent as to prevent mental health issues and other problems requires significantly more than just paying attention to your kids. It requires genuine effort to stay on top of emergent research (the same research corporations are using to advance their agendas) and a considerable amount of scientific literacy across multiple fields, all of which is far beyond what can be expected of the average person.

Yes, a lot of those problems can be mitigated by taking a more active role in your children's life instead of letting whatever technological babysitter is most relevant to the era we're talking about have unfettered access to their minds, but the problem runs a lot deeper than that. It's not going to be solved without some kind of organized effort to push back against and regulate it, because laypeople simply cannot be sufficiently equipped to keep up with the arms race. An organized regulatory effort is government.

Now, that's not to say that efforts from the government to regulate contemporary media tend to work. Most governments (especially ones as old as the US') are largely out of touch with current media trends and tend to operate more in terms of emotional rhetoric that appeals to voters instead of listening to subject matter experts to guide effective intervention strategies. That's a problem. But foisting the whole solution onto individual parents also isn't going to work no matter how many libertarian textbooks you spooge all over before making the suggestion.

ParanoidObsessive posted...
My usual stance is that any argument or proposition that involves "think of the children" as part of its justification is probably objectively wrong. Because it almost always is.

Conversely, however, letting that cynicism get in the way of recognizing and solving problems that genuinely are harming children is no less wrong. Yes, "think of the children" is almost invariably a shallow emotional appeal from people who have nothing more meaningful to say, but also the children should be thought of in instances where there is objective harm happening and something can be done to prevent that.

Even without time being especially limited, there are just so many other games that get good so much faster than that that slogging through 12+ hours of not-good to get there is a hard sell. It kind of depends on what they mean by "gets good," though. If it takes that long for any particularly redeeming features to show up? I don't see much point in bothering with that. If you can see the bones of something that will get interesting as it gets fleshed out further, and it just takes a while to lay the necessary groundwork to build into that? That's more justifiable.

If the doctor has only cleared him to return to work with conditions, then unless the company can meet those conditions (and the shoe thing alone means they can't), he should be off work. If they say they can meet those conditions, and he shows up and they can't, he can turn around and go home.

The costs to do it commercially add up, and I strongly suspect that it's that last one that's resulted in this price hike (namely, a cat bit a groomer, it got infected, and the medical bills/workers' comp payments ended up being more than the old price was able to cover). If you don't feel it's worth $18, don't pay $18 for it. You can get a pair of clippers for like $10-15 and do it yourself.

Cat scratches can also become infected easily due to scratching in litter boxes.

They can, but they're generally shallower wounds that don't close as quickly, so it's a lot easier to clean them. Bites tend to be deeper and smaller, so they don't stay open for very long and are much harder to clean out. There's also a broader range of dangerous bacteria living in cats' mouths (including the same bacteria they get on their claws thanks to cleaning themselves, only in a warm, moist environment where they can last much longer).

I don't think that's necessarily true because a 10 year gap doesn't really involve a generational gap where as 20-30+ year gaps get to real big differences as to the era two people grew up in which makes things quite a bit more likely to be tough/weird/icky.

Yeah, there's a pretty big difference there. 10 years can yield some weirdness in generational gaps, but by and large the biggest consideration is whether or not the younger one is a fully-established adult, and by your mid-30's, that concern has mostly been resolved. Get into significantly larger gaps than that, though, where you're dating somebody who could literally be your child even without involving teen pregnancy shenanigans, and there's considerable ick to be had there. That's not to say it can't be fine, because consenting adults and whatnot, but it's still going to raise some eyebrows and cause some issues to be dating somebody in such a radically different stage of life.
