Cassettes were just easier to listen to on the go until the invention of the Discman, and those weren't really a product that your average user could buy until 10 years after they came out. Even then, cassettes still had a lot of advantages over early CD players. It wasn't until the prices went down that it became a viable consumer product.

I suppose DVD's took a similar amount of time to really catch on, and followed a similar progression. Less so in computers, but it was several years before DVD players became cheap enough to compete directly with VCR's instead of just being a luxury upgrade, and several more before DVD's themselves became ubiquitous because people were content with their VHS collections. I attribute part of the PS2's success to that: By including a DVD player before DVD players were something most people were willing to buy for themselves, buying a PS2 to use it primarily as a DVD player wasn't actually a bad idea, which was huge for establishing an early install base and giving it a competitive edge over the GC/Xbox (by extension, this meant it was pretty silly that so many people complained about the Wii not playing DVD's, since DVD players were everywhere and dirt cheap by then).

I guess my impression is mostly an age thing. I have watched CD's take over within my lifetime, so I assumed they'd also shown up within my lifetime, if not slightly sooner. Having been born in '89, though, I wasn't exactly sentient enough to keep up with the market trends of the early 90's in detail, so I'm not surprised my impression's a little off.

Yes, but it also took a while for them to dominate the audio world as well. Cassettes were still pretty common well into the early 90's. Granted, a big chunk of that was because of the challenges of incorporating CD players into cars, but still.

Yeah, if Russia tries nuking Ukraine, it's a given that everyone else will start nuking Russia. That means Russia will also start nuking everyone else, and the US is absolutely at the top of that list. That's not a matter of American egomania, that's a matter of the US being the world's most significant nuclear power.

This also means Russia won't try nuking Ukraine. Mutually assured global destruction is a pretty strong deterrent and there is no possible outcome of that decision that would result in an actual benefit for Russia.

That's not to say exceptions shouldn't be carefully monitored to make sure they aren't overstepping their bounds, but exceptions can nonetheless exist safely.

That and cook. I was half-decent at sewing back when we covered it in our Home Ec equivalent in junior high, but pretty much all of that is gone now because I didn't use or practice those skills at all through high school or beyond. I should really make an effort to relearn it, since I've got some jeans that need patching (I tend to wear holes in the crotches).

LinkPizza posted...
We should get rid of ideals like this. We shouldnt really be considering things like sewing masculine or feminine, tbh

Indeed. There's absolutely zero benefit to gendering basic life skills, whether it's sewing or carpentry. Everyone should be taught everything. Those that are in relationships can defer to their partner to handle the skills that their partner is better at, but doing that pre-emptively on the basis of gender instead of based on who's more capable is just stupid. That means single people are out of luck, as are those in same-sex relationships (not that the sort of people that give guys a hard time for sewing typically consider same-sex relationships legitimate), plus you end up with a bunch of people who just aren't great at a given skill doing it because their partner has never learned how.

Of course, with the Internet around, learning is easier than ever even without broader educational efforts, which is gradually solving the gendering issue. Now, we just have to wait for it to become normalized.

What you're talking about is quibbling over the specific semantics of "personal responsibility," also known as pedantry. What I'm talking about is the underlying point that far too many people would rather quibble over the specific semantics of "personal responsibility" than accept that the whole situation would be a lot better if they collectively got over themselves and stopped looking for excuses to make the world around them a worse place. You are, in fact, demonstrating the underlying point quite perfectly by proclaiming yourself to be one of said too many people.

Personal Responsibility is the responsibility you alone have for yourself. Not putting responsibility on others, or others placing responsibility on you.
What you described was a responsibility to other people.

And you are personally responsible for the effects your actions have on other people.

I'm sure you can finagle your way around this specific wording with some manner of pedantic mental gymnastics, but the underlying point remains valid, which is presumably why you're focusing on pedantry and not making any actual argument against it.

Probably not the common cold. The common cold is caused by a very wide variety of viruses (including many strains of coronavirus), and the symptoms are mostly the immune system saying "ew there's a virus get it away from me!", rather than anything inherent to those viruses. We could probably put a dent in the current collection of viruses that are responsible for it, but the niche of "viruses that trigger an immune response but otherwise infect people asymptomatically" is a very broad one that's pretty easy to occupy, so new strains would evolve to fill it almost as soon as infection control measures went away.

So... SP1, maybe, SP2, no? Especially where the Director's Cut is already included in this bundle and that's like half of SP2 (though I think the extra skill tree is what interests me the most of what's in it, so it's not the half I might actually want). I can always pick up the Designer's Cut individually later if I feel like it, though my impressions of BL3 are that it won't hold my attention (and wallet) like BL2 did. In that case, I think grabbing the base game for $8 instead of waiting for a better overall deal on the Ultimate Edition is going to be my best bet.

Humble's also offering both DLC's bundled for $20 (USD, so I guess like $26 CAD) for Choice subscribers, which is an excellent price, but that offer ends March 1 and I probably won't even have played the game by then, let alone played it enough to know whether or not I want more.

The base game and one DLC (Director's Cut) are in the current Humble Choice, and I've got the option of re-subbing for $8 (CAD). If I'm likely to want all the DLC, though, it's almost as expensive to buy both season passes individually as it would be to buy the Ultimate Edition outright (the lowest sale prices to date are $51 for the bundle, $22 for SP1 and $26 for SP2), so I might not end up coming out on top there. The general consensus seems to be that BL3's DLC is largely missable and hideously overpriced, though, so if skipping it is the better option, it's a great deal.

In practice, Everhood is also in there and $8 is a great price for that alone, so I'll probably go for it regardless, but I like opinions.

I think it depends.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, et al are non-subjective, by which I mean they don't have a pre-set topic to talk about. The idea is that you're meant to, well, socialize and I consider socializing distinct from (if related to) discussions. Socializing involves talking about yourself and other people; discussions are on a specific subject.

I personally don't consider GameFAQs to be social media, because the emphasis isn't on the users and their lives, it's about the topic of video games and the community that has spawned from them. Reddit, similarly, is typically less about the users and more about building a community focused on some hobby or other subject.

It's obviously open to a lot of interpretation, but for me I see a big difference between true "social media" in the vein of the companies I mentioned earlier versus sites like GF, Youtube, Reddit, and the like.

Facebook groups do exactly that, though: Provide a community for like-minded individuals to discuss a common interest. Similarly, people frequently focus on a limited range of topics on their Twitter and Instragram feeds. I get where you're coming from, and the distinction can be made between subject-focused and individual-focused social media, but I don't think the distinction is so clear as to be able to say that only the individual-focused side of things counts as social media. Focused discussions are a part of socializing in the real world, after all (whether in the form of defined clubs/activities or just whatever people happen to be talking about), and what we do on GameFAQs and Reddit is simply the online analog of that.

Plus, of course, that distinction kind of goes out the window entirely when we look at social boards like PotD. GameFAQs may be subject-focused in a general sense, but this board is entirely devoted (or at least has been co-opted) to talking about whatever random crap comes to mind. Whether GameFAQs counts as social media or not, PotD definitely does.

There are far too many variables to give any sort of blanket answer to that question beyond "whenever it's stupid and/or dangerous," which is a pretty useless answer. Usually, though, I'll explain why I'm calling a viewpoint stupid and dangerous whenever I do so. Constructive criticism is important, after all, and if the individuals holding that viewpoint believe I'm wrong, that gives them the opportunity to argue their position.

Then everyone that's ever used a phone is disqualified. Also shouting out the window counts. Also those gossip card things they used to spread. Maybe the Romans were the first with social media. Although sharing cave drawings probably counts as memes

Using a phone or shouting is direct communication. You're not creating media for the purpose of socializing, which is what the term "social media" implies. By contrast, on a message board, you are creating written media (posts) for the sake of communicating socially. That's no different from sharing pictures on Facebook.

Youtube is a weird middle ground. By and large, youtube videos are created for the purpose of expression, not communication. There are, however, active communities built around those videos, communities which often include the video creator and are sometimes referenced by the videos, which amounts to two-way communication through created media (social media). I'd say there are ways to consume Youtube that do not qualify as social media, but also ways that do.

Twitch, by comparison, is definitely social media: The content creator is actively interacting with the community at all times and as an integral part of the media being created.
