This is simply a step in popular theories of cognitive development (i.e. William Perry's work).

Step 1: Dualism (usually seen in very young or immature stage in life)
Everything is black and white. You are either right or wrong. Things are good or bad. If I am right, you can't possibly be right if your answer is different.

Step 2: Multiplicity (usually seen in college or among college-level education)
There can be more than one right opinion. Different perspectives and life experiences makes it so that everyone's opinion is correct.

Step 3: Relativism (typically happens towards end of formal education/emergence into adulthood)
Whether you are right or wrong is dependent on the weight of your evidence. What makes you right? Credentials, research, facts, experience are all factors that come into play to determine how "right" you are.

Step 4: Commitment to Relativism (Later years in life)
Similar to Step 3, but this is built upon years of life experience to help you make those kinds of judgment calls, other than just theoretical ideas.

Granted, you can still live your whole life and never leave the dualism stage. Both education and life experience can help progression through the stages.

As a business owner, the biggest struggle I face is that high school students are too busy with their extra-curriculars. Sports, band practice, drama club, junior leadership, tumbling, FFA, FBLA, volunteering, youth groups, etc. It all takes up their time because their parents say they need it for college.

For me, the best thing I can do is increase my retention so I don't have to look for employees as much. I only pay $8 an hour at my laser tag place, but I am super flexible with work hours and time off, and what they can do while they are there. If it's slow, they can play laser tag, sing karaoke, make themselves some food, whatever. They get Christmas bonuses and pretty much dictate the hours they want to work.

But when it gets busy, they are expected to give it their all. Mediocrity is not tolerated. It's worked out pretty well and I've had the same employees for 3 years work all their way through high school/college. My assistant manager is a senior in high school and he's better than most managers I've worked with.

Lol, I love how these teachers love to paint themselves as just poor opprrssed educators and are demanding their pay increase 20% over thr next 2-3 years. That's a lot. They can obviously ask for whatever they want, but it's hard to take their "I'm a victim" rhetoric seriously.

I can't speak for Arizona because I haven't been following their news. But in the other states that have been doing this, teacher raises were only a small part of the ask. Mostly they just wanted better school funding for textbooks, classroom supplies, and raises for support staff.

It's ridiculous teachers are expected to purchase their own supplies for their classroom. What other industry requires that of its employees?

You can't go wrong with real estate if you can afford the payments. It's always an appreciating investment.

I "own" my house and the building where I run my laser tag facility. I say "own" because I am making mortgage payments for both.

I am about to move to another job in another state. Instead of selling, I am renting out my house (for double the mortgage cost btw) and will either sell my business or close it down and lease out the space. This way both buildings are paid for by tenants and help me pay off the mortgages. Once they are paid off, I can sell them and become $250k richer all at once.

Yeah seemed pretty obvious to me

Up until this point, I don't think Hulk has lost a single battle. At least, it was never this one-sided. I think after the events of Thor:Ragnarok, Hulk started developing emotions other than rage, as we saw when he was talking to Valkrye and Thor how he didn't want to go away.

I think this added complexity to his personality instilled fear in him for the first time when he fought with Thanos. He's never felt it before and was unable to handle it. It's something that Banner will have to coach him through to learn to accept it and embrace it.

Are they finally starting to move away from just the screaming beserker savage hulk and more the savage yet still rational mind hulk as seen in EMH's avengers show?

It seems so.

I read somewhere that Thor: Ragnarok was supposed to start a "trilogy" of plot for the Hulk character. I guess this is it. Gradual character development for the green guy.

It's also forced Banner to try to figure things out without him, as we saw how he handled that one dude in IW with the mech suit. Pretty clever.

I really enjoyed the movie and the themes it portrayed.

However, I felt more emotionally invested with Osmosis Jones when they did the concept (albeit from a biological vs. neurological standpoint).

I know it's a movie for kids, but making the main character a little girl I think limited its potential. Having an adult outside the wheel may have given more complexity to the movie as their emotions are more nuanced. Kinda like Ratatouille except instead of a mouse it's feelings.

The role was for a middle aged man, but she auditioned for it and did so well they gave her it to her anyway.

If that's true, that's awesome. I love it when things like that happen. It makes you rethink the role and how it may avert specific stereotypes because it was written with a man in mind.

Another good example is Salt. The titular role of Salt was originally intended for a guy, until they gave it to Angelina Jolie. You can definitely tell the gender shift in the first 15 minutes of the movie, when she's being tortured in her underwear. Hollywood movies don't typically show physical torture of women heroes; that's something more common with male heroes. Women heroes are usually seen as effortlessly beating the baddies, or getting out of a tough spot right before being hurt dramatically.

You can also see throughout the movies how she subverts various female hero tropes due to the fact it was originally a male role.

Lawn mowing is big business in cities/towns with lots of yards. If I wait like a day or two too long before mowing my yard, I'll get like 4-5 people a day knocking on my door offering to mow my yard.

If you can make the investment of a push mower, it's an easy way to make money on the weekends during warmer months.

Even though I had a ride mower, I sold it and found it more practical just to pay a guy to mow my lawn every two weeks.

It served its purpose when it was created, but now times have changed. With technology, a lot of work is done throughout the day from different locations, at different times, for different reasons. Forcing you to stay in an office 8-5 every day is pointless, as most of the time there isn't enough to do for 8 hours every day.

At the very least, businesses should be trying different work models. Pay for output, not necessarily for hours worked. If you can get a day's work done in 3 hours, and of sufficient quality, why shouldn't you be allowed to leave?

Or for other industries, work is done at random hours, like lab work that is done in the evening, or meetings that are done virtually accounting for different time zones, or event-specific industries like catering and audio/visual companies.

If companies want to stick with the 40-hour standard, at least allow for more flexible hours that don't fall within the traditional range. Or allow working from home, as jobs are increasingly being done on computers.

This obviously doesn't include industries like retail or other customer service jobs where daytime availability is key. But even then, why do most customer service industries only open 8-5? I think society as a whole would benefit from having different hours. Have dentists that are open from 4pm-10pm. Have tag agencies, post offices, or insurance companies that vary in hours.

It's a slow day at work today and I could be doing something more productive elsewhere, but I'm stuck here till 5pm for no reason other than I'm being paid to do so.

Thoughts?

Targets background check policy was out of step with best practices and harmful to many qualified applicants who deserved a fair shot at a good job, said Sherrilyn Ifill, President and Director-Counsel at LDF. Criminal background information can be a legitimate tool for screening job applicants, but only when appropriately linked to relevant questions such as how long ago the offense occurred and whether it was a non-violent or misdemeanor offense. Overly broad background screenings unfairly limit opportunities for Black and Latino applicants due to widespread discrimination at every stage in the criminal justice system. We commend Target for agreeing to this settlement, which will help create economic opportunities for deserving Americans.

In the lawsuit, LDF and Outten & Golden represent Ms. Carnella Times and Mr. Erving Smith, who received conditional employment offers from Target after interviews. The offers were later revoked when the companys screening process found that Ms. Times had two decade-old misdemeanor convictions and Mr. Smith had a decade-old drug-related felony. The Greater Hartford Legal Aid, Inc. filed the initial charge of discrimination on behalf of Ms. Times with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2006.

so why are you guys asking if you should be forced to hire rapists at an OBGYN?

Also, my post earlier was right if this is the case.

People are quick to go to extremes and bring up murderers amd rapists. Those are not the people being unfairly targeted with these processes.

It is people with single misdemeanors from long ago that are completely irrelevant to the job. Or nonviolent felonies.

Punishing a 35 year old because of something stupid they did at age 18 isn't right.

This is an interesting case. Personally, I think that the amount is kinda ridiculous for Target doing something that most businesses due as standard practice.

However, there is a big problem with companies that do background checks at the beginning of the hiring process or ask about the criminal record in the application.

When people think of criminal records, they immediately think of murderers and drug dealers and rapists. But the vast majority of people with criminal records (I need to find some recent stats) are due to domestic violence (spouses got into a fight), petty theft, child abuse/neglect (can sometimes be something as simple as letting their kids play outside unsupervised), public intoxication (being drunk outside a bar), or a dispute between neighbors.

In a lot of these cases, the "criminals" are just people that did something stupid and got caught and punished for it.

But employers rarely take that into account in the hiring process. In the hiring committees I've been in, they see the criminal record checked 'yes', and they toss the application, without being bothered to see what the reason is. The most unfortunate part is that most applications will even state in their fine print that a criminal record alone does not disqualify you from a job, but in process that's pretty much the case.

For those who watch Shameless, there is a great example of this. One of the characters makes a really stupid mistake which is ultimately ruled as a felony. Fast forward to the future and she has turned her life around and is making her way up. She even gets an interview with an entry-level company. They are overly nice to her and are impressed with her skills. The second they see the 'yes' checked on the criminal record box they change their demeanor and let her go.

I do believe that saving the background check to the end of the interview process is worthwhile, because at least the person has a chance to impress the hiring committee before they find out about their past. They can then explain how they've learned from their past and have shown to be a competent applicant.

Should a person really be punished for the rest of their lives for being arrested for something as simple as public indecency or disorderly conduct 10 years ago?

That's not true at all.

Which part? Not checking the reason for a criminal record, or the fine print saying a criminal record doesn't automatically disqualify you for a job?

If you mean the former, I have been on at least 10 different hiring committees across five companies where they don't take more than a second glance at an application with a criminal record.

Regarding the latter, I think I've applied for at least 500 jobs in the last three years, and every single position for a company that hires people with a criminal past has that statement somewhere on their application or their website. Either that or they will clearly state somewhere that they don't consider people with criminal records.

This does not count felony convictions, though. There are far fewer companies that will hire felons, compared to people with lesser crimes and misdemeanors.

And this. I've inherited two other jobs that I shouldn't be responsible for because I get s*** done, and the people I inherit work from get to sit on their ass.

This happened to me. In my case, our offices were consolidating due to budget, so as a person moved on to a new job, I'd get their responsibilities. Out of the 4 times that happened, I only got a pay raise once, yet no actual promotion in title.

I still get paid way below the national average for my position. I'm a finalist in two jobs for companies out of state who are offering more than double my current salary.

Moving jobs really is the only way to move up nowadays. Gotta have a competitor steal you away.
