What job is this interview for?

A lot of the boys over at Cars & Trucks will be disappointed by this, but it's a call center job that pays considerably better than what I can currently get in the HVAC field and it won't interfere with my schooling while I knock out the rest of my degree. Once I'm done with that, things change, but the pay and benefits are too good to turn down if I do indeed get the job.

The college I attend costs $750/semester to attend, plus books and stuff.

I'm in a trades program that takes 2 years, then I'll transition into the local Union and start at $20/hour plus full benefits, and 2 years knocked off of the 5-year requirement to advance to Journeyman which makes a guaranteed minimum of $30/hour.

ALL WHILE INCURRING ZERO DEBT

This is not how it's gonna go for everybody, but I can tell you there are good options available for the correct people. IDC how you feel about unions, sometimes you've just gotta take a good deal and run with it.

But also the system was apparently difficult to develop games for.

Not an excuse since EVERYTHING was difficult as hell to develop for in that generation. PS1 had its share of programming nightmares (if reading various dev blogs and skimming over a LOT of documentation is anything to go by) and I'm pretty sure they were equally difficult, just with different sets of problems.

PS2 was also considered difficult as hell to program for compared to the Xbox and Gamecube, but it managed to sell the best by a considerable margin in its run.

instantly tried to remember if it was the Sealed J Sword or Nels Claw,

Real Nei's Claw is probably the hardest item to get in the entire game. Let me just refresh my memory on the drop rate... 1/25k ish, which is already pretty abysmal. THEN you find out which enemy drops it... Freaking Ill Gill. No thanks.

Episode IV has a seemingly less terrible option with Girtablulu dropping it 1/8192... but I'm pretty sure you'll have an easier time hunting the Ill Gills.

Oh yeah, Hit was ridiculous lol.
When I played on the PSO Ultima server not so long ago, I had something with a lot of hit, but they modified the game....a lot.

On a server with a decent economy it's not hard to get geared up decently in a short time (V units, good mags, ATA boosting barriers, hit sacrificial weapons, Froozers/Sneedles, hitless Heaven Strikers) but going for high-end stuff will cost you lots of time, lots of photon drops/crystals/spheres, or both. BUT despite all that, PSO still rewards skill and teamwork over gear anyway. Too many shitty Dark Flow/Berserk users who can't stay alive, too many people who don't know enemy patterns or who go into fights with reckless abandon, LOTS of people who can't avoid the one-shot kill moves, etc.

That sounds ridiculous.

Don't even get me started on the odds of finding rare weapons with good stats. It's easy enough to find a bare-bones Frozen Shooter (staple item for gun users), but finding one with "Hit %" is a task since you only have about a 5% chance of any weapon having a Hit% value when it drops.

I don't normally sympathize with hackers/cheaters but there comes a point where you just want to enjoy the game and not go insane looking for a literal 1/1000000 item.

Came here to post this.
PSO had some laughable drop rates, first you'd need a rare enemy, then you'd have like 1 in 280,000 chance of it dropping something.

Rare enemy hunts are laughable because people are really terrible at probability. I recall the "rare enemy rate" being 1/512, ok that's not so terrible right? Ok, now the item will only drop 1/2 of the time you kill that rare enemy. So the real drop rate of that item is 1/1024, still not TERRIBLE right? The problem is, there might only be 30 of that creature in the "optimal" quest for hunting it and it might take you 5 minutes to run through that quest every time. 1024/30=34.1333 runs. At 5 minutes each... you'll hunt that item for nearly 3 hours "optimally." Ok, 3 hours isn't really bad, most people can probably dedicate that sort of time to a game in a night.

...trouble is, that's an "easy" hunt in PSO.

Psycho Wand is a rare enemy drop. 1/512 chance for the rare enemy to appear, 1/204 chance for the item to drop from that rare enemy. Now, that looks really good right? 1/204 doesn't sound too bad...

...until you realize that the "real" odds are 1/104448. I seem to recall the "optimal" quest for that hunt only containing like 12 of the enemies in question, eating up 2-3 minutes each time you'd run it. 104448/12=8704 runs, at 2.5 minutes average... That hunt is statistically likely to take you 362~ hours, or 15 DAYS of actual played time.

Sure, you could also hunt it from a different enemy in Episode 2, but that still comes out to a hunt that will take you around 4 DAYS of just doing that one quest over and over and over.

All for the CHANCE of getting a rare item that isn't really worth it when slightly lesser items that are almost as good are much easier to obtain.

I immediately think of Phantasy Star Online's hilariously bad drop rates on things, especially in the Dreamcast era. Ubers were truly uber. Sure, people hacked them in, but even today in the private server scene with no hacks... very few people have the Ubers, and they still drive their hunters insane.

Psycho Wand and Sealed J-Sword immediately come to mind.

It's dying in the sense that the things people USED to love about it are being stripped away more and more each year, being replaced with other things.

What frightens me is that there are people just now coming into GDQ who will consider THIS to be the "golden age" in a few years when it changes again.

Then they cut you loose after pushing the boundaries of that rule.
