Based on family history of longevity and barring accidents, I would surely give up 5 years in my 80s for $2.19 million tax free in 2023. I'm good at investing too, I'd only have to work again if I wanted. For like at least 40 more years too (barring accidents), no brainer for me.

Even if they are only talking about the increase from 2008 to 2021, that ~4ish% increase is only about a 25% increase from the 2008 statistic. No idea where they got 48% from.

Also, I mentioned Upstart a while ago in one of these topics. Up 230% over 3 months. Up 10% just today. Nowhere near it's all-time high, and it is a banking stock that uses AI that is doing well at a time of bad rates. Imagine in a time of good rates years from now.

I also want to mention Paypal, but don't have the best case to make aside from it being the market leader and having a lower valuation than 5 years ago. It's historically cheap without a real reason to be.

I will easily make up for that 300k with all the time gained, and then some. Yes, it will take work, but you are operating with zero mental fatigue and the benefits of a perfect night of sleep at all times.

The health gains alone probably make up for that lost 300k if you consider how much a lifetime of doctor and other health visits cost in the USA.

This is all SO valuable, I would probably pay $300k for it.

It's Summer

My favorite weather is sunny clear days and I enjoy spending them by the water or playing sports. Also the fact that the longest overall days going by daylight hours are in the Summer is a factor.

Winter would rank higher if there wasn't so little daylight in the USA

It needs a cap like no more than 50% of your total income for it to be fair on people who have heavily taxed jobs. Or else 1.75-2x taxes leaves them with nothing or needing to change jobs.

If you stay your current age, but it shaves off these years from your age of death... Then it might make sense to gamble a little.

If you are confident you can make your 80s, you could take the million today in exchange for 7 years, invest it properly, and work much less over decades while that grows. Trading twilight years for an early semi-retirement is attractive assuming the person dies a natural death from old age.

Final answer: zero years.
