Do you support abortion?

Ireland will hold a referendum on its restrictive abortion laws at the end of May.

The exact date will be announced when the debates in parliament come to an end. Currently, abortion is illegal in the Irish Republic even in cases of rape and incest. Terminations are only allowed when the life of the mother is at risk and the maximum penalty for accessing an illegal abortion is 14 years in prison.

Voters will be asked if they wish to repeal the eighth amendment of the constitution that was inserted in 1983 and which enshrined the equal right to life of the mother and her unborn child, and to instead enable parliament to set the laws.

Last December, a report by a specially convened Oireachtas committee found that the eighth amendment was not fit for purpose and should be repealed. That followed recommendations from members of Irelands Citizens Assembly to liberalise the law on terminations

The committee also recommended abortion be available up to 12 weeks of pregnancy without a woman having to explain her decision, and that the procedure should be allowed if the life or health of the woman was at risk.

It also called for expectant mothers to be allowed an abortion at any stage of the pregnancy if doctors diagnosed a foetal abnormality that was likely to result in death before or shortly after birth.

The Irish Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, said on Saturday that he will campaign for the law to be relaxed around the issue, and that his pro-life beliefs had evolved since 2014. He said: I think sometimes that term pro-life and pro-choice can be misunderstood.

I think even people who are in favour of abortion in certain circumstances are pro-life, I still believe in life, but I understand that there circumstances under which pregnancies cant continue.

Over 170,000 Irish women have been estimated to have traveled to the UK to access abortion services. Recent opinion surveys suggest there is huge public support for moderating the laws so that women could have abortions in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

In response to an Irish Times/MRBI poll asking Will you vote to change the constitution so that the government can legislate for abortion up to 12 weeks, or will you vote to not change the constitution? 56 per cent voted in favour, 29 per cent said they would vote against and 15 per cent did not know or offered no opinion.

When asked if their opinion had changed in the last year, 19 per cent said they were now more open to the idea.

It's interesting that Ireland has (Or use to have) a reputation for being right-wing and Catholic yet it was one of the first nations to legalize gay marriage. Now it's looking like it will allow abortions as well.

For a long time Irish people went to England to get abortions as it is legal there. And that was quietly accepted as the solution, which seems silly.

Ireland has had a huge 180 in attitude within two generations. It's interesting to watch how a culture can change so rapidly due to the intergration of modern technology. Long accepted ideals are being challenged because men in Ireland heard questions people outside of Ireland were asking that they never thought about before.

I think this is why China and Saudi Arabia and North Korea have such strict censorship.

A woman who joked that she wanted to get taken out by a sniper was shot dead by her jealous ex four days later.

Chelsie Cline was one of four people murdered by Tim Smith, 28, with the shooter issuing a chilling warning on Facebook before the attack.

Last Wednesday, Chelsie uploaded a meme to her page which read: After this week I rlly need to get taken outon a date or by a sniper, either one is fine w me at this point.

Horrifyingly, Smith responded below, saying I could do both. And four days later he made good on the bloodthirsty promise, killing his ex, her half brother Seth Cline, 21, Courtney Snyder and James Porterfield, 27, at a car wash in Melcroft, PA.

Chelsie is believed to have been dating Porterfield at the time of the attack. His girlfriend Jenna Porterfield, 24, told the Pittsburgh Post Gazette that he had been cheating on her with Chelsie, and that she had dumped Tim Smith just two days before. EU says it will hit back 'swiftly and appropriately' if Trump restricts trade

She said: I was told my husband was cheating on me with (one of the victims), and that she had broken up with her previous boyfriend two days ago, and he went crazy and shot them all. And she paid tribute to her husband on Facebook after, writing: We both did wrong but we were both smart enough to understand we loved each other to no ends.

Chelsie and her friends were taken out by an AR-15 assault rifle, a .308mm caliber rifle and 9 mm handgun. Smith later shot himself in the head, and is in hospital, where he is not expected to survive his injuries.

Chelsie and Will were shot after getting out of their Dodge Stratus, with Courtney and Seth killed as they sat in a nearby Chevy Silverado.

Another passenger, Sammi Snyder, hid in the backseat and escaped with minor injuries.

A sister cafe called Blighty India in Tottenham boasts a neon portrait of Gandhi, Bollywood posters and India flags as part of the cafe chains branding celebrating Commonwealth countries.

Its menu offers a vegan breakfast called The Gandhi as well as Bombay Hash, Bengali Breakfast and Eggs Kerala and the cafe stages regular curry nights, yoga classes and creates cocktails with names like Bombay Sunrise.

Activists from Black Lives Matter UK tweeted: So glad people are calling this Empire nostalgia out. But other customers and local residents are calling the campaign against the cafes madness.

A resident wrote: Sorry but is this a joke? Theyre a small business providing employment in the local area.

Since the video emerged online, the SOAS Students Union have released a statement of solidarity with Miss Hussein on their Facebook page condemning national news outlets which have covered it.
Tim Stewart News Limited

They say that the coverage the protest has gained and the attention focused on Miss Hussein is racist.

The statement says: The cafe exercises a concerted historical amnesia of British colonialism, which is offensive to those who continue to experience institutional racism.

The protest was targeted at the owner calling for them to change the decorations and imagery of the cafes and to the customer to boycott until the owner takes these actions.

A Winston Churchill-themed cafe was stormed by left-wing protesters shouting Churchill was a racist, after the owner invited them to the restaurant to discuss their concerns.

The Blighty UK Cafe in Finsbury Park had 14 protesters burst into the cafe on Saturday morning and stand in front of startled diners, chanting about racism and taking it in turns to read from a prepared script.

One of the group declared: We cannot accept the unashamed colonial and gentrifying presence of this cafe before the rest of the group chanted You will never make colonialism palatable.

The apparent leader of the group, Halimo Hussein, is a politics student and co-president of Equality and Liberation at the School of African Studies University of London and a staunch supporter of the Labour party.

She demanded that the cafe owner apologise to the local community and immediately change their decorations for their poorly thought and insensitive branding. While running for office in her student union, she said: I want to bring decolonial politics to the forefront in our fight for institutional change.

As the group continued to read from their script, they urged customers in the packed cafe to boycott until they take the concerns of the community seriously, and chanted It is our duty to fight for our freedom and We have nothing to lose but our chains.

Other group chants included It is our duty to win and We must love and support each other.

The owner, Chris Evans called the police after the group went into the cafe and said: I have already invited these people in for coffee to discuss their concerns. Instead, they have come in and shouted at my customers. My staff have been left frightened and so I am reporting the incident to the police today.

I would much rather they came to debate in a civilised manner what it means to be British in modern Britain. As far as I am concerned, if you cannot celebrate Britain and great Britons you are just erasing history. And if you cannot celebrate Churchill, you cannot celebrate anyone.

Mr Evans had previously reported vandals to police for defacing the cafes striking street art mural of Churchills famous two fingers pose alongside the slogan double shot, jokily claiming that he was ordering a double espresso.

The protesters are also leaving scathing online reviews slating the cafe, where diners at the cafe drink from Churchill mugs underneath model Spitfires and Union Jack flags. The cafes signature dish is The Winston a traditional full English breakfast with Cumberland sausage and Yorkshire black pudding.

As they walked out, a customer hit back: Churchill fought for our freedom, to which the group began chanting: Churchill was a racist.

One man in India is alive despite being hit by a train while trying to take a selfie in front of it on Jan. 21. In the selfie video, one can see 21-year-old Subhash alias Shiva holding his finger up in an attempt to touch the incoming train while posing, reports India Today.

As the train comes closer, we can hear Shiva being warned to move away by a friend. On top of that, the train's horn can be heard loudly, yet Shiva doesn't move. "Wait just one minute!" Shiva replies in his native language, before continuing to shoot the selfie video on the railway tracks.

One more deafening horn blast can be heard before impact.

"He did not realize the danger he was in and ignored the furious honking by the loco pilot who tried to warn him off," explains Officer Dasya Naik, The Indian Express reports. "The train hit him and he was thrown away from the track."

Shiva suffered serious injuries and is currently being treated in a hospital, but it is believed he will survive. "He received serious injuries on right hand, head and chest, but is out of danger now," said Naik.

After he leaves the hospital, Shiva will reportedly also face punishment for the near-fatal selfie: the Railway Police Force has registered a trespassing against him. Unfortunately, it's just one of the many times somebody has attempted to take a selfie in front of a train and found themselves in a hospital.

In December 2017, a 16-year-old girl in Indonesia survived serious head injuries after posing for a selfie in front of a train. Upon impact, Ely Hayati's skull was said to be cracked open. It is not clear whether she will suffer any long-term brain damage.

Only seven months earlier, another man in Illinois also suffered critical injuries after possibly taking a selfie in front of a train as well, reports The State Journal-Register. Witnesses said the 33-year-old man was holding his phone up in the hair in front of the approaching Amtrak train.

"He appeared to be doing a selfie or something to that effect," Lt. Bill Neale of the Springfield Police Department said. "As he put his arm down, it appears it came into contact with the engine. That spun him around, and he fell down and went underneath one of the cars."

The final round of clinical trials for MDMA assisted psychotherapy is kicking off in Vancouver, leading the way for Canada and the United States to approve the drug for therapeutic use as early as 2021.

The third and final phrase of trials gets underway after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) designated MDMA as a breakthrough therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in August 2017, ensuring that it will work with advocates to complete the last phase quickly.

Traditional PTSD treatments can last years or as long as a lifetime and focus on desensitization, which can cause pain. Even more, just 10 to 15 percent of people actually recover, and theres a high drop-out rate, Mark Haden a public health professor at the University of British Columbia told Canadas CTV News. On the other hand, MDMA-assisted therapy usually lasts fewer than four months and two-thirds of participants didnt have PTSD one year after treatment, he told the news outlet.

The therapy consists of three eight hour sessions in which the participant takes MDMA, and 12 sessions without the drug. The entire process spans three-and-a-half months.

MDMA, or 3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine, is an empathogen, meaning that it stimulates togetherness and trust among users. It also inhibits activity in the brain that treats fear and stimulates hormones that make people feel more connected. While some may refer to MDMA and ecstasy interchangeably, MDMA is the pure form of the drug, while ecstasy can be cut with unknown adulterants.

"It wasn't a party drug. There was no party," Ed Thompson, a former PTSD sufferer who took part in the second round of trials told CTV. "It wasn't trippy. I didn't see things. I didn't have some miraculous spiritual experience. I didn't get the urge to get up and dance.

"For the first time in years I was able to open up and talk painlessly," he added. "The fear, the barriers were removed and I was able to talk to these people."

This final Canadian trial will cost $26 million, will involve up to 150 participants, and is intended to test whether the results obtained in the second stage can be replicated on a larger scale.

Vancouver is one of 16 sites spread out amongst Canada, the United States, and Israel, where researchers are attempting to prove that MDMA has strong therapeutic purposes. In the United States, the FDA has greenlit a third round of clinical trials, which could be launched in the spring and continue into 2021. But first, the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies, which is overseeing the research in North America, must collect $25 million to conduct the study. So far, it has received a $5 million donation from soap maker Dr. Bronners and more than $1 million in bitcoin from a cryptocurrency philanthropist.

Neat.

There's also been success in helping people with PTSD by teaching them gardening and raising puppies.

Who would have thought that after all these years, the right combination was puppies, gardening an MDMA

TopicFirst ever marijuana-based drug submitted to the FDA for approval.

A prescription medication made from marijuana might be approved by the Food and Drug Administration this summer. The advance could be a huge step forward for people with epilepsy, which this drug treats. And it would signal a newsome would say long-delayedembrace of cannabis-based medications in the U.S.

GW Pharmaceuticals, the company behind the drug, started the approval process with the FDA last year, and a study published this week offers more encouraging signs.

The medication under investigation is made of cannabidiol, or CBD. In a study published Wednesday in The Lancet, researchers gave either a brand name form of CBD called Epidiolex or a placebo to more than 170 people with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a rare, severe and difficult-to-treat form of epilepsy. Adding CBD to other anti-seizure medications cut down on the number of seizures a person experienced each month by 41 percent. By contrast, the placebo reduced the number by about 14 percent.

Its very exciting that it shows efficacy, said one of the researchers, Dr. Elizabeth Thiele, the director of the pediatric epilepsy program at Massachusetts General Hospital. And of course theres been a huge amount of interest because its cannabidiol.

Up until the 1800s, neurologists would use cannabis to treat conditions including epilepsy, Thiele told Newsweek. But in the 20th century, federal and state governments clamped down. In the 1970s, the Controlled Substances Act made studying marijuana-related compounds nearly impossible.

Some treatments have circumvented regulatory roadblocks. The FDA approved two versions of tetrahydrocannabinolthe chemical that results in a highas nausea treatments. But those are synthetic compounds; they aren't made from the plant itself. Epidiolex would be the first plant-derived approved drug and the first approved cannabis-derived treatment for epilepsy. Its going to be kind of tragic that all of this was put on hold for decades, Thiele said.

Finding a way to keep epilepsy under control can be life-changingor even life-saving. Injuries can happen during seizures. People with uncontrolled seizures can't drive. Epilepsy has even been associated with sudden and unexplained deaths.

Thiele doubted any neurologist in the country hadnt heard a request for medical marijuana lately. CBD-heavy products can be found on the market alreadytheyre part of the treatment regimen for Alexis Bortell, the 12-year-old girl suing the federal government over marijuana policy. But they always include other chemicals in marijuana.

Epidiolex is an extract. "This is purified CBD, Thiele said. And that purity makes the compound more palatable for regulatorsand doctors. Every time I give a kid a dose of [Epidiolex], I know exactly what theyre getting. Theyre not getting all the other chemicals. (Thiele has worked with GW Pharmaceuticals, the company making Epidiolex, for four years; the company funded the study.)

The findings from the new study didn't surprise Dr. Jerzy Szaflarski, the director of the epilepsy center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham . Other CBD trials conducted in recently for epilepsysome using Epidiolexshowed similar results. Epidiolex has also been studied in people with another severe form of epilepsy, Dravet syndrome.

The FDA may decide not to approve Epidiolex; the agency has until June 27, 2018 to decide based on data from trials including this one. Nevertheless, Thiele is optimistic. Hopefully, it will be approved, she said. Patients want it.

If I had a daughter I would teach her to put her keys between he knuckles and then punch anybody who groped her.

A Texas woman who called 911 on Saturday saying she was being stalked was shot and killed by a San Antonio police officer during a brief struggle in a home, authorities said.

The unidentified woman, said to be in her 40s, also called police saying her computer was being interfered with, FOX29 San Antonio reported. Police conducted a welfare check about 3 p.m. and found the woman locked in her bedroom.

Two police officers and a cadet then asked the woman if she had a weapon. She responded no and police officers forced their way through the door. Police Chief William McManus said in the news conference he did not know how long the officers were speaking to the woman before entering the room.

"When they got in the room, she was standing there with a Glock pistol in her hand," McManus said at a news conference.

Police officers attempted to disarm the woman, getting into a brief struggle with the woman. At one point, the woman began aiming the pistol at one of the officers head.

A female officer fired her gun, striking the woman. She was taken to the hospital where she later died.

The officers were not injured. McManus added that the officer who fired her weapon has been on the force for six years. She was placed on administrative leave during the investigation into the incident.

I was told [the woman killed] has been in this neighborhood for quite a long time. She has a history of mental illness and shes had some issues with other folks on the block, McManus said.

McManus said the womans claims that she was being stalked were unfounded.

Saturdays incident was the second fatal police shooting in San Antonio in a week. A police officer shot and killed a robbery suspect Thursday night after being stabbed in the hand.

I can't help but wonder what it must be like for any cop on "Adminstrative Leave" after killing someone.

Can you imagine what it must be like, telling your friends and family why you're off work. What do you even do with your time? What if you're married and your spouse is still working?

It must be a surreal experience.

This year, January 13 and 14 were stressful days for many Japanese teens. Thats because those were this years exam dates for the Center Test, a rigorous examination that many Japanese colleges require a high score on as part of their admission criteria.

Adding another layer of anxiety is the fact that examinees dont take the Center Test on their respective high school campuses. Instead, they have to travel to a regional test venue on the consecutive mornings in time for a 9:30 a.m. start.

And as if all that wasnt enough to worry about, Japanese public broadcaster NHK reports that when the time for the Center Test rolls around, would-be predators boast online about their plans to grope female high school students on the train on the morning of the exam.

In a recent segment, NHK program News Watch 9 presented a collection of social media posts about the writers planned chikan (train groping) activities, which included:

Tomorrows the Center Test, and the forecast for chikan is great.

The number-one chance for chikan is on the days of the Center Test.

Since the Center Test takes place tomorrow, the conditions are perfect for chikan. All right, gonna hop on the train tomorrow and have a little nice communication with the girls.

You can feel up girls headed to the Center Test all you want and get off scot-free!!!

The Center Test is tomorrow? Its a chikan carnival!

'Why not allow the girls to wear regular street clothes instead of their mini skirt school uniform? And to the females, I've taught my daughters to break a finger first and ask questions later.'

I just realized something amazing. If you grope a girl on the day of the Center Test, you wont get caught, right?

The reason for all this deplorable confidence? The Center Test is offered only once a year, and all examinees, nationwide, are required to take it at the same time. Show up late, and you run the risk of being told Sorry, you cant sit for the test. Come on time next year. While not an insurmountable black mark, a gap year on your academic resume carries a stigma in Japan that can make job-hunting more difficult, and so arriving late to the Center Test site can have lasting repercussions for a persons education and career.

Reporting a chikan incident, though, is a time-consuming process. The victim has to wait for the train to reach the next station, then somehow summon the authorities, who arent likely to be standing right there on the platform when she gets off. Then she has to give a statement, and thats assuming there isnt an altercation when she and/or any good Samaritans try to drag the chikan off the train so that he can face justice.

All of that takes more time than any buffer teens are likely to build into their schedule when heading to the Center Test venue, and so the logic of the boastful chikan is that when forced to choose between letting their assailant get away with his transgression or being late to the test, many girls will choose the former.

Considering that how harried and strapped for time teens are on the days of the test is common knowledge in Japan, perhaps the best course of action would be for the Center Tests governing body to make clear that while showing up on time is generally a must, being a victim of a crime, and reporting it to the authorities, is a valid excuse.
