So. My home state team, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, is hosting Ohio State. Upset? No, I'm just hoping they score! It's been the years since the Knights last scored on the Buckeyes. It doesn't even have to be an offensive score; special teams has long been Rutgers' biggest strength.

Notre Dame and Michigan played last week, and Colorado faces Nebraska today. The other two former Big 12 teams are officially on notice. Yes, we know the SEC is super tough. South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia all have non-conference rivals, all of whom are probably better than Texas is right now, and Kansas is almost never any good. Suck it up.

Okay, yes, I know that Kansas is being bigger babies about the KU-MU thing compared to Mizzou. But since they're still in the Big 12 and both Colorado and Nebraska are gone, it's thematic.

A few years back, those who were around the nomination process for VGMC no doubt remembered that I was pushing hard for an obscure game called Stella Glow. Well, I still feel like that's the best use of a pet project I've got.

So far I'm up to Venom Snake, Cuphead, Bulbasaur, Godot, Lili de Rochefort, Mimikyu, Dedede, and the two guru noms. May also start trading noms for whatever pet cause I take up... perhaps the lead character of a certain game that I start pushing hard every VGMC.

Oh, hey, wait, that's right. Since I'm "going back to basics", that is, restoring the legacy levels to their original positions under SmartMuffin, that means I'm on the teaser level already. Which means that I'd better choose my other two carefully, because by not locking the line in as a marquee game, I risk this one falling if I have to change my pick later.

The letter or the spirit? That's the question this week as to which game gets the fifth marquee spot. Two of them are obvious as they feature two ranked teams, and there are two others that feature a ranked team against an unranked Power 5 team that's receiving votes in both polls. And normally, "ranked vs. ARV in both polls" is second to "ranked vs. ranked" in terms of order of choice, followed in third by "ARV vs. ARV" and then matches that feature teams that are ARV in one poll only. The problem is...this results in a game with a 36.5-point spread being considered "marquee", as Arkansas State (1 lone point in the AP Poll, 5 in the Coaches' Poll) goes on the road to take on top-ranked Alabama.

Yeah, the spirit of the marquee wins out over the letter. Besides, looking at the preseason poll, it looks like the Red Wolves were already receiving votes and merely didn't do anything to screw that up in Week 1, rather than actually having an impressive win to warrant consideration. And Iowa State-Iowa actually has the smallest spread of the five, so including that instead of Arkansas State-Alabama is definitely a positive for our so-called marquee.

(The "rules" of choosing marquee games, by the way, are different late in the season. Games that directly decide a division or conference championship, even if one or both of the teams in question aren't ranked, take precedence over anything else, followed by games between two teams with identical records of 5-6 due to the similar "must-win for both sides" atmosphere. Penultimate-week games where one team has a final-week bye and is already 5-6 while the other team is either 5-5 or 4-6 may also apply to that rule.)

I'm going to try to limit my "weird things" this year, though I still maintain my planned level 9 that I've never had to unveil. Therefore, the level that had been Level 2 when SmartMuffin ran this but had frequently been Level 3 under my reign is once again Level 2.
