True. Even considering that fields used to be twice as large, we've never had more than 2 until this year, when we rose to 4.

Which...actually doesn't bother me that much. I love Fire Emblem as a series, but I don't consider it to be elite from a soundtrack standpoint. Also, I can't find any YouTube videos with the FE:A DLC's remixes of previous games' tracks, and while I might consider some FE4 songs anyway--though the one that was nominated this year doesn't do it for me--I prefer the FE:A versions. If that's interest I'm seeing, though, I'll make a note to nominate "Vs. Alvis" next year, even if I have to nominate the original instead of the FE:A version (used in the "Infinite Regalia" DLC map).

And on the subject of remixes...seriously, no one else was willing to follow me into S3&K's Final Boss theme, even though the vastly inferior Generations remix is already a retired song? Charlatans! ;D (Not that the Generations version isn't fine as well, but S3&K has one of the best soundtracks of the 4th generation and it's really disappointing that the only song originally from that game to retire was an 8th generation remix--and hopefully I'll at least get to pluralize that after this year, because Flying Battery is my favorite song from that soundtrack and it has a remix in the field this year.)

For those that have the same number of total matches, I prioritized more total appearances, even though the same number of matches on fewer appearances means a better average. For same number of appearances, I prioritized most 4th-round appearances, followed by most 3rd-round appearances. If the exact rounds reached were exactly the same, I prioritized recency of last appearance, then recency of best appearance (e.g. all of those VGMC8 debuts that have made round 3 in all three contests since.)

...Or maybe it wasn't that game in particular, but the series in general. Ayesha was the worst, but the franchise as a whole was inescapable last year, and I'm pretty sure that I'm happy that Flying Clouds, Drifting Haze is one that's returning.

But yeah, I'm really happy with this field, even beyond my own noms. Post #363 in the other topic said "the sonic representation of MAXIMUM HIGH SPEED is... jazz, I guess", and I was like, "ooh, I love jazz! And it probably won't get much support, so maybe I should even give it a double...oh, wait, that support that first showed it to me made it a 4/3; I guess I don't need to help it after all".

I really do need to get to these nomination topics sooner, though; it seems like there are always a few Bravely Default songs in here, but never any of the good ones.

(I don't actually have a preference. I'm chalking the current situation up to "board 8 is dying" than the nomination system. This is very clearly an outlier to past years with this system.)

SovietOmega's links more or less answer the question. The answer is no, finger quotes are most definitely not a thing in Japanese. If you're referring to the animation I'm thinking of (I might not be thinking of it--I last played the game back in 2013 or something), I always thought he was doing a little picture-frame thing.

But to quickly dive into things in a bit more detail: There's two reasons quotes are used for purposes other than, err, quoting in Japanese. First, as you probably know, Japanese is written with no spaces. So then, how do you know where the word boundaries are? I don't know if I can give you a short answer (other than "git gud baka gaijin"), but basically you use pattern recognition, the knowledge that kanji usually start terms, etc. However, this means that identifying fictional terms -- that is, new terms -- can be extremely tricky. Therefore, authors will on occasion use quotes to offset a term to make it easier for their readers to parse.

Also, as a fun experiment, try reading a sentence written in all-caps with no spaces. It messes with how your mind processes the text, forcing it to read English in the streaming, greedy manner that it reads Japanese rather than the "normal" way to read English (i.e., to grab the first and last letters and then all the ones in the middle all at once). It's kinda neat! And as an aside to an aside: yeah, the brain processes ideographic (i.e. kanji-based) languages like Japanese in a fundamentally different way than it does an alphabetic language like English. Because of this, you get cool things like that someone dyslexic in English may be perfectly able to read Japanese, and vice-versa. But I digress.

The second reason is for emphasis. Japanese characters, with their increased complexity relative to English characters, don't lend themselves to bold or italic or ALLCAPS or even BOLDTASTIC CAPS adventures. Marking them with quotation marks serves this purpose instead. You'll also see texts (usually manga) where dots are placed over certain words; this works the same way.

So the next time you're playing an RPG and you're wondering why some "key term" keeps getting put in quotation marks, now you know. This is actually one of the things I consider a strong mark of amateurish translations, but that's neither here nor there.

It's been far too long since the board has anything truly VGM-related. When VGMCX ended last summer, I didn't imagine the board would go quite so dead, or that the hole from not running Best OST would be quite so big. As such, I'm making this thread well ahead of time so that hopefully people see it, and start thinking about it, and nobody manages to miss the entire nomination period when it finally opens because they're actually looking for it.

Time frame is not set in stone. I'm very occupied right now cleaning out my dad's house and dealing with other aspects of his estate. I'm not going to pretend that the majority of the work for the contest isn't in the set-up stages. And that's assuming that newbie can update the script to accommodate site changes in time, which he says he intends to work on, but he's been quite busy as well.

But I'm hoping to aim for starting nominations around the beginning of March. So if it comes off that way, consider this four weeks' notice.

Awesome. I have some ideas for what I'll do this time, though I'll probably be pushing hardest for some of the same songs as last year.

I miss BOST, though; it's a good way to give songs exposure.
