Gen 5 made 150 pokemon and didnt reuse any so the role of pokemon you get early and incentivises trades definitely needed to be filled and those pokemon in gen 1 were geodude and abra, machop you cant even get untill after your third badge so I wouldnt even say timbur's placement is a reference to machop

Conkeldur is absolutely a reference to Machamp. Not only are they 3 stage, and trade evo. You catch them in similar stages of their respective games. There is definitely tons in gen 5. Trubbish and Grimer, Pidove and Pidgey, there was an electric mouse, Sawk and Throh for Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan. I mean come on, it's written on the wall.

sawk and throw are definitely hitmons and every game has a trash bird and a pikaclone
I just dont see the simularites in conkeldur besides fighting trade evo.

conkeldur is a machamp reference in that he is a fighting trade evo (timburr doesnt even evolve at level 25), not much else, there are 700 pokemon, there are gonna be a ton of similarities

and btw I absolutely agree that there are a lot of gen 1 references in the games especially starting with 5 (6 is where it got egregious for me personally) I just think that to call golem and conkeldor mirrors or references is a stretch unless any fighting trade evo made from now on is a machamp reference and any rock trade a golem reference, I just dont think they have much in common.

bro there are 5 stage 3 lines of trade evos whose second stage comes at 25, its a good number for gameplay purposes, gen 5 introduced 2 stage 3 trade evos and they both evolve at level 25 so I guess conkeldurr is a golem reference too.
Golem and gigalith look nothing alike, aggron has a simmilarly pointy sillouete as opposed to the circle that is golem, its not much but thats it.

and of course ygo burned off lot of fans after the first series, most series work that way and it doesnt mean we are down the die hards, none of us are watching the pokemon anime right now, a lot of people fell off after the first series but to say that pokemon is down to the die hards or that any of the series after the first arent popular is just wrong?
You yourself fell off of yugioh after the start and thats fine but yugioh has been thriving in the time you werent looking, just cause you werent in the loop doesnt mean the franchise is dying lol

also "well known" is such a goofy term here its so incredibly vague
the vast majority of stuff we would consider well known in our respective interests are never gonna actually be well known by so many people, if you said the last of us wasnt well known you'd be a dumbass, but if you pulled a random off the street they probably dont even know what that is because they arent in our sphere of interest.
yugioh and 5ds are very well known in the card game sphere and thats just a fact, of course if you arent into card games i wouldnt blame you for not knowing

it seems we are talking about 2 different groups of people here, i am refrerring to the actual yugioh fanbase as opposed to casual watchers who definitely mostly fell off after the first show
im talking about how 5ds was recieved by people who definitely watched gx but still didnt want to give 5ds a chance, as the years have gone on 5ds has really become one of the most popular series among YGO fans and it just shows that people back then really should have just given it a chance because it is great and card games on motorcycles totally works if you actually watch lol

Season 2 of GX *was* way late. They were introduced in episode 62 in a series with 180 episodes. Compare this to the bikes both being a central gimmick AND introduced at the start. Plus the only really wacky thing about the Neo Spacians is their origin, they're not much different than other cards in the series.

the aliens was not waaay later its where neo spacians come from i think its season 2 maybe? comparable to where battle city comes in the original and its easily the most iconic part of GX for neo spacians alone (trust me people fuckin LOVE neos to this day for whatever reason)

I do agree that gx was def goofier and so it prolly got away with it but fwiw its the english version thats so goofy the japanese version plays it a lot more straight.

I always hated how everyone at the time deemed 5ds card games on motorcycles as too wacky but forgot (or more likely didnt know) that earlier than that in gx they launched cards into SPACE and years later jaden who designed them as a child went to go get them so he could duel aliens

No, because Goat format still exists, and Goat format is a hell of a lot slower than the normal format. Also, the pacing of the game was relatively the same up until I quit playing at the end of the GX Era. Once they started adding Synchros/Xyz/Pendulum/Link the game got noticeably faster. I listen to a lot of YGO stuff on Youtube. And yes I specifically pointed out your comment about Metamorphosis + Thousand Eyes Restrict by mentioning Goat format. Goat control versus modern decks isn't even comparable. For reference, Goat format actually has warrior beatdown as a viable deck, because it actually was a viable deck back in that format.

also traps are absolutely not out of the metagame, they were certainly for a while back there but they have made a big comeback lately

im sorry to break it to ya but the game was never like this, people always compare the yugioh of the playground with the meta yugioh of today
not to say the game hasn't changed drastically in the years but a lot of the things people remember were nevet good, rituals were bad, fusions were bad, cards requiring a tribute were only playes if they had crazy effects like jinzo

I love old yugioh but everyone thinks it was dark magician and blue eyes when in reality it was envoy of chaos, metamorphosis to cheat out thousand eyes, 1 of every busted spell that was limited to one copy etc.
