People are literally pissing their pants over a logo that likely took an intern one hour to make.

It's not even like Beyond Good and Evil 2 or the Final Fantasy 7 remake which had a substantial reveal trailer and something to get people excited. People are losing their minds over nothing.

However when the conflict is literally the same every episode, and it's literally solved by some deus ex machina bullshit within the last 5 minutes just as the characters give up hope that's not a formula. That's just boring storytelling.

Characters are great, writing is fantastic but the way every episode follows the exact same structure gets really old really quick

Every episode sums up like:

"You accidentally deleted our entire engine? That's it. Pied Piper is finished."
*Sad music begins to swell up*
"You get so close to seeing your dreams come true and something just has to take it away. It's fucking bullshit man. We all worked so goddamn hard and now we'll never see"
"Oh I made a backup. We're good"

It's not Dark Souls

But it does capture a lot of what makes Dark Souls interesting. Level design especially.. DS has moved too far way from that interconnected, shortcut, secret riddled game that the the early titles did very well. The Surge does that pretty well too.

Combat and gameplay wise it's not as fluid. But it gets points for trying.

I mean, what's the alternative? Boss fights that have the same length, but no phases so it just drags on? Boss fights with lower health bars so the fight doesn't drag on, but now they end too quickly? I'm actually interested in hearing your solutions to this perceived problem. I like phases because they allow you to learn and adapt as the fight goes on, and they keep the same fight interesting over longer periods of time by introducing mechanics mid fight in a progressive manner.

Boss fights don't "drag on" typically unless they're poorly designed. There isn't a problem here that needs to be solved.

It's overused and has diminished the effect into nothingness. It's supposed to ramp up the intensity and make the fight more exciting.

Instead, it makes me roll my eyes and feel like my time is being wasted because the developers wanted to get cute.

It should be used absolutely sparingly. I'm with some other posters here, final boss or bust.

To me the details absolutely sell a game and a huge reason why I love this game so much. One of the most impressive things to me is how literally every NPC has a story and place in the game, alive or dead. You're not doing what most games do and reading email chains between people you never meet. You are actually given terminals in the game you can track literally every NPC in the game and you can get as deep into the backstory of every single character if you want. It's stuff like that that elevates this game into something special.

There are so many little details that are so well thought out and contribute to the world building of the game and make a big difference on gameplay. It feels SO rewarding as a player paying attention to the details and being rewarded on a level that very few games have the patience to follow through with.

Brilliant game.

Copying from one of the highest praised franchises in gaming history. That's a bad thing on CE. I LOVE Bioshock, but gameplay wise this this game makes it look like Call of Duty by comparison IMHO. The freedom, the choices, how much it respects the player. This is the modern day equivalent to System Shock that players deserve.

Oh and by twist are you referring the "reveal" the player experiences within the first 10 minutes of gameplay? The part of the story they spent zero effort trying to hide, and in fact actually couldn't hide because then they wouldn't be able to show off the actual gameplay? That "twist"?

Tons and I'm gonna cop out and say you'll have to play it to truly experience what it has to offer. I mean I'm not gonna sit here and list all the original aspects of the game as if that has any telling of the quality of the sum of its parts. I get the same satisfaction i did when I played those games but like I said above, I think this well surpasses Bioshock when it comes to how rewarding the gameplay and world building feels.

And I mean if this was a generic shooter I would maybe see some level of his criticism on it not being "original". Theyve only scratched the surface on this style of RPG/shooter. You're about as far away from a proper target of "unoriginallity" as you could possibly get.

If you like Deus Ex, Bioshock, System Shock and you aren't playing Prey idk what is wrong with you. This game is easily worth the full price btw so if it's a financial reason, go mow some lawns or something son.
