This is a direct comparison of Smash 4 vs ultimate in terms of looks:



"Improved anti-aliasing and visual-texturing to his hat and clothing. Lighting effects. Colors more vibrant. New animations and taunts. Minor adjustments to moveset"



"DK looks worse in the brand new Switch version. Went with a flat texture."



To me this looks very similar. But in the video, it says the "environments look dramatically different"

"The inclusion of shadows has complety changed this background object."



"This Xenoblade stage looks noticeably worse"

"It's insanely difficult to track what's going on in these games"

I'll let appearance slide(even though that is also untrue), but they play pretty fucking different. Like if you think ultimate and 4 play the same, then you must think all smash bros play the exact same. Which is laughable.

I might have forgotten how Smash 4 plays, I haven't played it since 2015. But I do vaguely remember how it plays.

I'm pretty confident I will be. Also, watching a game being played will pretty much never be the same as actually playing it, regardless of just watching a game granting that sense of discovery.

you might be right. In these topics I seem to always go off on perceived "rants", that I'm looking to hate a game just to be a hater.

Did you think Civ 6 was good? I didn't like it, thought it was too confusing and slow. Civ 5(and 4) were better to me

Maybe. Of course people are hyped for it now, and I really did try to like it. I've played it for about 6 hours total. It was.... a surprise to me how bored I was.

This is coming from someone who loves the original smash, likes Melee(armada and hungry box ftw), and even liked smash 4 when it first came out.(those 8 way smashes were really fun at first)

I'd be down for putting Go on the game of the decade list though. Ahead of smash ultimate.

Also COD4 and modern warfare, both of those games I would still put above smash ultimate at this point.

As for why you're not big on Smash Ultimate, SND, it seems like you appreciate games that become truly big by pushing the envelope in some way, particularly when it comes to gaming as a whole. In my opinion at least, Smash Ultimate is this decade's apex of iterative gaming, but I don't think the iterative approach is something that sticks with you. I would hypothesize that if the next Smash game took a radically different and innovative approach to its general premise, even with mixed execution, you would appreciate that more than you do Smash Ultimate. Yes metal that's a great way to explain how I feel about smash ultimate. Its incrementally better than the previous smash games. It is no revolution. That's just not good enough in late 2018, we are too jaded at this point.

You can basically know what smash ultimate(and video games in general) is like without even playing them in 2018. Thanks to trailers, streamers, let's players, and social media.

Also, civ 5 i played a lot! I think it's a good game but i wouldn't put it in my top 50 for game of the 2010s.

Yes. Its decent, but too similar to smash 4. I remember when smash 4 came out, holiday season 2014. They were giving it the same accolades, same praise, normal people were playing it at holiday parties during 2014 holiday season.

Like 6 months later people those same people were not playing it. They moved on.

I'm not saying the same thing will happen with ultimate. It does seem likely to me though.

Kind of redefined what indie games could be for me, and I'd point to it being a big part of the start of the incredible wave of indies that's hit over the last decade (though I'll give Braid in '08 and Limbo in '10 some credit for that too)

Journey is a great great pic. That game was so beautiful.

It was talked about so much when it came out in 2012 as an artistic, EXPERIENCE.

Interesting, I definitely didn't consider League coming into this topic but OP makes a good case for it.

Especially if we are considering "game of the decade" to mean the game having had the largest impact on the whole decade and not just the best game released in this decade.

LoL might end up being the most influential game in history if e-sports continue to grow like they have (even if its not LoL itself being the top e-sport going forward).

Yea I thought about this topic for awhile. Even though League has died off in terms of popularity as of late 2018, I think it's impact on the culture has been that great.

It also introduced the idea of games constantly updating through patches. The game is truly never complete, and actually evolves with the times. That concept came about thanks to League. I mean, it wasn't the first ever game with a patch, but it certainly was the most influential one.(you could argue for Wow)

Also, just the pure numbers. From 2018 data:

"The most recent figures show that League of Legends has an active player base of over 80 million monthly players. Or over 27 million players every single day."

Compare this to other candidates for GotD:

Zelda: Breath of the Wild: 7.0 million in Japan and 5.01 million units overseas, 12 million total
Persona 5: 2.2 Million
Spec Ops: The Line: under 1 million copies
GTA 5: Over 95 Million Copies.

Amongst these, only GTA 5 has a competition with League, with more total sales. Yet how many people still play GTA 5 in late 2018? Probably not many.

Amongst other online games:

Overwatch: As of May 2018, Overwatch had 40 million players worldwide.
Fortnite: Fortnite has 78.3 million monthly players, according to Epic.(Oct 2018 data)

These are other serious contenders for Game of the Decade.

If I had to go with just one, it's Spec Ops: The Line. It really pushed game narrative for me, it still astounds and affects me deeply on every playthrough, right up there with Silent Hills 2 & 3.

Overwatch and Resident Evil 7 are close contenders though.

Never played spec ops yet. First time hearing about it.

Overwatch would be in the top 10 for me. That game was amazing(and still is good)

For me, I think it's been League of Legends.

I know it wasn't officially released in the official window(late 2009), but its influence has been undeniable.

It really pushed esports to the forefront, so much so that esports arenas and leagues are more prevalent now.

It was the game that pushed streaming to the forefront. More so than any other game, people streamed league of legends to build a following during the middle of the decade(2011-2016 in particular)

For better or worse, it introduced the idea of "toxic behavior" and "reported", two issues that went beyond video games as social issues during the decade. The idea of online bullying and censorship...those ideas were given a prime example through the medium of League.

In terms of numbers, I pulled up an article from 2016 that said League has more than 100 million active players. Yes this number has fallen likely now heading in 2019, but still that is an incredible amount.

Finally, just on a personal level, I remember how blown away I was personally playing the game when I first started in 2011.

It was my first MOBA, really one of the only major gaming innovations during the decade. The idea of battling as 5 versus another 5 was still a very novel idea when the game came out. It was like a war! Such a cool concept. When I first started playing the game, back in Sept 2011, I was addicted, playing 10 hours a day with my brother.

The game is addictive, clearly. It inspired more games that followed(overwatch, heroes of the storm, fortnite even in the battle arena concept) than any other game in the decade.
