He must have equipped the Ice Shield. Many of the shields you pick up late game will teach spells to characters as if they were espers, but they don't give stat bonuses like espers.

Ahh, that's exactly what it is. Good to know. I'll re-equip him with the Thunder Shield now and teach him Bolt 2 that way. I think that's the only other elemental shield I have though.

Hooooly shit.

Okay...that might be a relic actually worth going back for. And at least I don't have to go back to the Umaro section for a fourth time to get it, just the secret entrance section.

Hah, I put Umaro in my party real quick just to see what his stats were like before quitting for the night and...whoa, you can't even equip dude with anything but Relics! Seems like he's going to be another interesting character.

Assuming there's another creature-type character in the game, I'll basically be able to have a party of all non-humans with Gau in the mix. Well, three creatures and wannabe creature, but you catch my drift.

Oh, and Mog started out as Lv. 42 on my file, so that's pretty awesome.

There was also a unique relic if you examine the spot Mog was standing in when you found him.

Damn, I don't think I did this. What's the name of the relic and is it perma-gone now? I don't really care to go back either way, just curious.

Well, Mog certainly is an interesting character. His dance attacks seem to miss an awful lot though, and they're quite random. Some seem quite strong and attack multiple enemies, some just hit one enemy...you never know what you're gonna get with this guy...err, this moogle! He also randomly learned Ice 2 and I didn't have an Esper equipped that had the ability to learn that spell. Odd. But he doesn't seem to be randomly learning any other spells on his own. Huh.

Anywho, made it back down to Umaro for the third time and recruited him! Alright. I think that might be it for me tonight, but I'm looking forward to seeing what Umaro is all about.

And I'm pretty sure there's nothing left me for me to do in Narshe, at the moment? I thought I would recruit Locke there, but I'm fairly certain I explored the living daylights out of that place. Even checked Pickpocket's house in the upper right corner and everything. But do let me know if I may have missed something.

Yay or nay?

Yay.

So this was a bit misleading. I was asking whether I should go back to the second part of the Narshe caves, after you jump off the cliff. And it looks like the answer was....nay, and then yay. I had to go to the section of the caves that you get to via the secret entrance to find Mog first. Now that I've found him, he says he can recruit Umaro, which means I have to do that second Narshe cave section a THIRD time now, jeez. But...just to ensure I don't have to do it four damn times -- do I need to have Mog actually equipped as one of my four party members to talk to Umaro and get him to join? Or having just found Mog, is that enough?

Also I just had my new hardest fight of the entire game in that second cave section. There's a treasure chest that is really really difficult to get to thanks to all these trap pits, and it's a fight against three creatures simply called Pugs. They decimated me like four times before I was able to win. Had to equip two Cure ring relics and basically keep Celes summoning Cure 2 spells every single turn. But the big game changer was when I realized that taking them out one at a time was easily the way to go. Once I tried that strategy, it was actually a pretty swift and smooth fight and I beat it on the first try.

But my reward for doing all that... Absolutely, positively, not a damn thing except 5 magic points. Not even any EXP or GP! What. The. Fuck.

So...I overcame the Ice Dragon (that fight was pretty damn easy), made my way to the edge of the cliff, got a new Esper, Tritoch, and jumped off the cliff into a new part of the dungeon. I made it to the end where I fought that Yeti named Umaro (whose name I recall, as I'm pretty sure someone spoiled for me earlier in this topic that he becomes a party member). I talked to Umaro after beating him, but he has nothing to say. And then I just....looped back around to an earlier part of the caves of Narshe. I'm about to go back in them as I feel like I missed something here? Yay or nay?

And aww yeah, Tritoch has Lv. 3 Fire, Ice, and Bolt spells to learn, but damn, the learn rate is at 1x. I'll probably equip this to Relm, but she is just about to learn those same Fire and Ice Lv. 2, so let me have her learn those first. (And yeah, I've actually realized her utility and noticed her Magic Power stat was crazy high myself, right after I started this Narshe run.) I would give Tritoch to Celes, but she is still learning Cure 3 with my last acquired Esper, which also has an incredibly awful 1x learn rate. But I think I'll keep her learning that, and maybe keep Relm in my party thanks to her great magical prowess. She just needs to learn some more damaging spells and fast.

The rainy slum town is Zozo. Also, Cyan's pen pal lives in Maranda, and I think you can get a couple extra lines if you bring Cyan to meet with her.

Maranda, that was it! But yeah, I knew the rainy town was Zozo. It's one of the other unique towns in the game, so it sticks out. But the letter stuff with Cyan started out in the town of Maranda.

Actually, Gau can't use suits, they're armor for Relm and Strago. Give it a try - it's decent armor, with a fun gimmick.

Hah, I actually just figured this out right now messing around in my equipment screen with Relm. I haven't tried equipping the Moogle Suit yet, but I'll give it a whirl and see what it's all about.

It's a fight with a gimmick - the goddess is invulnerable and can counterattack, so you're intended to just sit back and heal whenever she's active.

I thought that might be the case, as I noticed she obviously changed between two forms. But from what I recall, the game seemed to indicate you're still doing damage in either form? I guess it just misleads you. Or maybe I'm recalling incorrectly.

Ahhh, that makes sense that that wouldn't actually be Kefka's Tower. Like, I didn't think it was the actual final dungeon or anything.

And yeah, I suppose 30 hours isn't really all that much. It actually feels like I've played longer than that, which I probably have what with the way I use save states while exploring dungeons, as explained earlier. But I mean, I doubt that even adds up to an extra hour.

E: Oh, actually since I did the World of Ruin escape sequence and Cid stuff twice, I definitely have more than an extra hour of playtime unaccounted for.

He tells me something to the effect of there being tons of treasure hidden in Figaro Castle, and says there's someone in Narshe at an item shop who's waiting for me. So I now know my next destination -- but first, let's see what this tower is all about!

Oh, no, let's not see what this tower is about. I can only use magic spells here, which is a really cool game design choice, but I'm not ready for it. Actually, I may have been able to do decently, but I basically only have 3 viable party members, because I stupidly have Relm in my party just to get a little use out of her and teach her some magic spells. But, uh, right now she literally knows only Cure. (Once I teach her some attacks, I plan to just replace her back with Cyan again, most likely, or maybe Strago since I've also hardly used him). Anywho, I'm getting my butt kicked in my very first battle here and say fuck it. Not sure if I would have won or lost, but I revert back to my save before talking to the 100,000 GP advice guy anyway, high tailing it away from Kefka's Tower and make my way to Narshe.

Alright, now I'm at Narshe and -- whoa -- it's dungeon-mode Narshe, complete with random battles and all. Cool. This is where I'm at right now, and we'll see what goes down here! My party is as follows:

Celes: Lv. 38
Edgar: Lv. 37
Sabin: Lv. 38
Relm: Lv. 36

And my time is at 29:58. Hot damn, 30 hours in and it still feels like I have a whoooole lot of game to see. This is a JRPG alright.

E: Oh, and also, before I stop at Narshe, I find this little house that is apparently the home of Gau's dad. He mentions something about fixing a chair and uhhh, I could not at all figure what the heck to do here. I'm guessing I need something I don't yet have. Probably something I have to explore the Veldt to obtain. But that will have to happen later!

Here, I should point out that I have been using save states quite a bit in this game, but in a way that I feel isn't cheap but merely cuts down on the tedium of frequent random encounters. Basically, in dungeons where there are split paths, I'll often create a quick save and then explore off in a direction to see if there's anything worthwhile that way. If not, I'll revert back to my save. I don't do it all the time, but I do it enough. And heck, if I didn't do this I'd actually be slightly higher-leveled, so it keeps battles and things interesting (although I already feel pretty damn OP at this point). I don't know, I just don't feel like this is cheap but YMMV.

Anywho, after beating my first of the eight dragons, I work my way back through the dungeon to Zozo. Here, I just warp out because there's no point in facing all the low-level monsters in the town, and I take my new airship around the world.

Can't really remember the order of places I went to, but I've been to a bunch now, mostly just chatting up NPCs and getting information on the whereabouts of different people in the world; i.e. I know Gau is somewhere in the Veldt region.

I eventually end up in Jidoor where I hear talk of events transpiring in Owzer's mansion here. I make my way to the mansion and sure enough, the Ultros portrait is gone and replaced by a portrait of Emperor Gestahl. Upon inspecting this portrait, it suddenly comes to life and I do battle with it, opening up a hidden door that leads deeper into Owzer's mansion.

And whoa, there's a full-blown dungeon here! This place is great. It's got floating chests that come down and turn into battles to win the loot inside. It's got opening and closing doors that I have to go in at the right time to advance through the dungeon or I'll loop back around (didn't use save states after looping here either), and it's got some more neat goodies like a Moogle Suit, which I'm guessing I'll be able to equip on Gau once I get him back.

I make my way to the end of the dungeon and find Owzer and Relm and a demon-possessed painting. I didn't fully grasp the story here, but it involved Owzer finding a stone at an auction house, which somehow made him desire this specific painting to be made? And the only person who had the talent to sketch such a painting was Relm or something. Either way, I have to do battle with this painting and hot damn, this fight lasted even longer than the dragon battle earlier, although I never lost this time. Just constantly had to use curing and life spells again. Luckily, I was able to wind up with all four party members alive upon finally beating this painting (seriously took forever), so I got to spread out the EXP and MP rewards amongst everyone. And yay, Relm is back in the crew! Even though...I may care for this character even less than Gau.

After beating the mansion, I check out the auction house where I could have obtained another Hero Ring for 50k GP, and while I have over 100k, I didn't feel this was worth it at the time, even for maybe the best currently available Relic. I want to be sure to have enough cash to obtain the best gear for my party members as I reacquire them.

Now I'm doing some more exploring on the world map. And holy shit, I just found out that I can actually raise and lower my airship by pressing up and down on the D-Pad! Sweeeet. This let's me get a better vantage point of the world map. Can't believe I didn't realize this was possible until right now.

I travel briefly to Kefka's tower and, oh hey, look who it is -- Strago! It looks like I timed this visit perfectly as I had just gotten Relm back, and I think she was needed to get Strago back into the party. He was marching around with these soldiers who seem be part of this "Cult of Kefka" I keep hearing about. There's a guy here who offers me advice for 100,000 GP. I take him up on it...aaaand of course revert to a save before giving him the money, because fuck losing all that hard earned cash.

Mmmmkay, update goodness, picking up from where I left off at Darril's Tomb.

Like I said, this was a pretty neat dungeon; I explored the heck out of it and there were a lot of good treasures here. I wish they had leaned in more on the puzzle elements though. There was some water raising stuff, but it turned out to only be a one time thing. I also have noooo idea what was up with those four tombstones that had letters written on them. They appeared to maybe be anagrams? I wrote those letters down on a piece of paper in case I need them for some puzzle later on. I would have just assumed I'd have used them in the same dungeon, but I could not find anywhere to do such a thing.

At the end of the dungeon, we get a really sweet moment where some of Setzer's backstory is filled in. Turns out that the eponymous buried of the tomb was none other than Setzer's girlfriend. Darril and Setzer used to race their airships back in the day, when one day Darril crashed and suffered an untimely demise. Once again, for such an old game, they found ways to make the "cinematic" parts feel special. In this case, the game briefly transitions into...essentially a 2D sidescroller, as you make your way down a staircase to Darril's resting place, all the while getting flashback scenes of Darril and Setzer. It's really effective. When reaching the bottom, we find out that Setzer also buried the Falcon, Darril's airship, next to her in this tomb. And that means that, aw yeah, we get a new airship again! And the World of Ruin is wide open.

From here, I went to Kohlingen (at least, I think I remember it being Kohlingen), where I did the whole quest of getting Cyan back. I liked this quest a lot from a gameplay perspective, but from a story perspective it didn't totally grip me. Apparently, this random town girl wrote letters constantly to her boyfriend; upon her boyfriend's sudden passing, Cyan began receiving these letters and found comfort in writing her back, pretending he was her, uhhh, now dead boyfriend. That's pretty damn creepy, Cyan.

But the dungeon here was also pretty great. To get to it, I returned to the town of Zozo, where I explore a bit until I get a key to open the rusty door at the top of this one building (I actually scaled the building first before getting the key, then had to go all the way back down and up again ugh). But the enemies here are ridiculously underpowered compared to me now. After making it to the top of the building again, this is where the real dungeon begins.

It's a short and sweet one, but the monsters here are some of the more powerful I've fought yet. All my party members are in the mid-30s level-wise, so it's still easy, but it's a nice artificial feeling of challenge. After I get to the top of this mountain, this is where we find Cyan and he reveals his tale of deceiving the poor girl who lost her man. Yeah, none of this did much for me, but at least we get to hear Cyan's theme, which is pretty great.

After I get Cyan back, this was where things actually got interesting. I was going to warp out of the dungeon, but I decided to instead power my way back through it to do some more leveling up and to see if I missed anything. Turns out I missed something huge: my first boss fight with one of the eight dragons! (Actually, I can't remember if I missed this, or if I needed some item and had to do this boss fight on the way back. I think it's the former though.)

This was by far the hardest fight in the game yet, and I actually died. Luckily, there's a save point right before the fight, so I didn't have to feel guilty about using the SNES Classic's save state or rewind features. Yay for playing authentically. But yeah, this dude took an insane amount of hits, and it was really a game of keeping my party members alive (thanks, Celes) long enough to wittle away at his HP.

Judging from how few games are on PS1 classic compared to NES classic, I doubt there's be more than 10 games on a hypothetical PS2 classic. And if it does happen, I guarentee that Xenosaga will never be considered. When games like Final Fantasy X/X2/XI/XII, God of War, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Metal Gear Solid 2/3, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Kingdom Hearts, Katamari Demacy, and Okami exist, no one's going to see Xenosaga and think "yeah, that makes sense to put on here".

...

You didn't read the most important part of my post. Also you just made a way better PS2 Classic than Sony actually will, if the PS1 Classic's garbage library is anything to go on.

This detail on the eight dragons might be considered spoilers? Don't think it's much of a spoiler, but I'll put it behind a tag just in case.

Phunbaba is one of the monsters unleashed by Kefka, but it isn't one of the eight dragons

Theres no spoilers whatsoever. Right in the town where Celes lands, theres an NPC that explains how the Eight Dragons, Phumbaba, and Doomgaze were all unleashed by the apocalypse brought on by Kefka.

Thanks for letting me know this. I avoided that spoiler tag earlier, but yeah, I definitely already knew this thanks to said NPC. Also figured from that my goal in the World of Ruin will be taking down these eight dragons. But don't tell me!

Oh, so you get two attacks with the Genji Glove but at the cost that each one now does only 75% of its normal damage? Interesting.

I realized quickly that the Genji Glove with Celes was not the way to go. I thought it was because she has the two best equippable weapons, battle power wise (aforementioned Atma Weapon and Enhancer), but then realized that Sabin's insane vigor level made him a way better candidate. Now he's got the Genji Glove and Hyper Wrist and is doing 1,000+ damage each attack, so 2,000+ damage really. I also messed with switching between the Hyper Wrist for him or the Hero Ring/Atlas Armlet, and the Hyper wrist was doing a couple 100 more damage each attack. Hmmm. I was testing it on the same enemy though. Maybe it would be different if I tested it on other enemies? Not sure why that would be the case though.

So anyway, this is the first time in the game I'm officially stuck! After exploring Nikeah and finding out about the thieves whose ship is apparently about to set sail, I messed around in the town some more and figured I maybe had to go to the inn, like I did the last time I took a ship. Woke up and uhh, nothing had changed. The robber guys are still hanging out there and they all just tell me to get away when I talk to them; even the captain has nothing worthwhile to say. My thought process was maybe I need to find Locke first and he, being the thieving type, could help me get on good terms with them. And then townspeople also spoke about Figaro Castle getting stuck underground while it was moving. So another thought was that I need to find a secret entrance to that.

Aaaand that led me to the last hour plus of exploring the whole accessible overworld again. Went back to Albrook and Tzen and whatever the name of the town that Terra is in. I'm still having fun leveling up, learning new spells and putting the Esper system to use so I really don't mind, but I'm also only leveling up two characters at a time right now so this may not be the most efficient time to grind. Anywho, with all that, I still wound up directionless. I found a hidden chocobo stable in the woods near Terra's town (that's what I'm calling it okay), and now I'm just chocoboing around looking for where I might go.

I may need a subtle clue. We'll see! Currently just took the chocobo back to Nikeah and I was thinking maybe there's a way to sneak on the ship too before they leave? So, yeah, I'm there now, but I have a save right at the chocobo place that I can revert back to.

Also weeee chocobo riding is purdy fun. Damn I want a current-gen version of this game.

also Phoenix Down is easily the most mindblowing of all these

a.) The obvious: the Phoenix is a mythical creature that is able to resurrect itself. The Phoenix Down item is used to revive a character in Final Fantasy.
b.) The also obvious: the word "down" in RPGs refers to a character being, well, downed. Dead. Unable to attack or do anything until being revived.
c.) The one that threw me for a goddamn loop: "Down" also refers to the feathers on a bird. So Phoenix Down is literally also referring to the down -- the feathers -- of a phoenix

Phoenix Down is literally a phoenix's down.

Alright, continued on from my file with Shadow and Cid intact and making some progress!

I start by re-exploring Albrook, just to refresh my memory of what the citizens have to say: Kefka's in a giant tower executing people with a thing called the Judgement of Light or something like that, there are eight dragons terrorizing the world, all that fun apocalyptic type stuff. After leaving Albrook, I travel to Tzen where I reunite with Sabin and had to save a child from a collapsing building -- last time it was a burning house! This game loves its setpieces. I actually took too long battling here and died and uhhh, since I never saved in the overworld post-WoR event, I literally ended up back at the floating continent, at the save right before Kefka. Wow, thank god for the SNES Classic save state/rewind feature. It would not have been fun to do all that again...let alone for a third time, since I already did the boring feeding fish to Cid event twice! (granted I only played that part a second time thanks to save states in the first place).

Anywho, I had more luck on my second go through the collapsing building, still managing to nab every chest and rescue the kid. Got some cool gear like the Drainer weapon, which steals HP from enemies every time I use it, and escaped alive. My first run ended because I thought once I got to the kid, it would be over, so I had less than a minute to high tail it out of there. I still only had like a minute and a half on my second run through, but I ran away from every battle on the way out and managed to escape with five seconds left, baby. Whew, that was intense.

After reuniting with Sabin, I did lots of overworld exploring. To be honest, while I dig the solemness of the World of Ruin, I'm already dearly missing Terra's theme during these overworld parts! Eventually, I make it to a town whose name I currently forget but that's not important because OH HEY it's my girl Terra. All these kids are calling her "mama" and stuff, and it turns out she sort of became their caretaker after one of the eight dragons, Phunbaba, attacked their town and killed their parents. Only two other adults watch over them now, along with Terra.

Aaaand right after learning about the attack, the aforementioned dragon returns! I have to engage in a one-on-one battle against it with Terra where I quickly learn it's unbeatable. After that plays out, Sabin and Celes come to the rescue and I whoop its ass. It runs away like the pansy it is.

After the battle is finished, Terra rests up in bed and alludes to "something going on inside her" that she needs to figure out. She also doesn't want to leave the kids behind, so sadly she stays behind for now. I get my first new esper in forever on my way out and hit the road again.

I do some more overworld exploring, heading wayyyy up north to my next destination, Nikeah. On the way there, I learn a new Blitz with Sabin that, despite its excessive button input requirements, seems rather OP. Refresh my memory here, B8: Sabin's Blitz power correlates directly with his magic power, right? I currently have him equipped with the Hero Ring relic that increases his magic and fight power. Maybe the earrings increase his fight power even more though? I generally use Blitzes with him exclusively. Also while grinding in the overworld, I manage to hit a whopping 200,000 GP, aww yeah. In the immortal words of Dave Chappelle: I'm riiiiich, bitch!

I finally make it to Nikeah, buy a weapon called an Enhancer, and now my Genji Gauntlet-equipped Celes has both the Atma Weapon and Enhancer on her. Goddamn is she going to do some crushing. What relic should I use to raise the attacks of both of these? They're regular fight commands, so right now I just have Atlus Armlet which says it raises fight power. Should I equip the Hyper Wrist instead, which raises vigor?

With all that out of the way, time to explore Nikeah and see who I reunite with next!

Don't go back for Shadow. Save it for a replay.

okay sorry I kinda ignored this advice

I like Shadow too much! So I booted up a save state right at the escape sequence, replayed it, and figured out that you're supposed to wait at the airship (I see JonThePenguin pointed this out now, but I skipped those spoiler tags at first). I also managed to save Cid and yeah, that scene was a lot less dramatic that way. I'm guessing I'll get Shadow in my party later, but what did saving Cid do? Does he just show up in later scenes now that he's alive?

Anyway, continuing onward tonight!

Of course Fox News is shaming her over being poor

That's fucking pathetic. In a country where over half of workers literally make less than $30,000 a year, it's damn time we get some representation of our own.

and yes that statistic never ceases to amaze me either, but it's real:

Hmmm, I once again don't remember this happening. Maybe I was so tense and in such a rush I missed it, but I have a save state right before this part.

did you know about the world of ruin going in? one of the crazier twists. this was the climax of the game IMO but there's lots of cool content in the parts to come.

I only knew that a thing called the "World of Ruin" existed but I had absolutely no idea what it was and this was certainly not what I expected. I just figured it was some cool area on the map or something! So yeah, still 100% effective.

Dont think I can really take part in this thread guilt-free after you just broke down earlier, but Ill try.

You taking part in this thread is a help to me, not a boon. The more I can keep my mind away from the dark places it wants to go, the better. My best friend was actually over during my floating island playthrough (though he left before the finale) and it was a good help, as is playing such a great game in general. No need to feel guilty. I found out some more info at court today and I may have a way out of this mess. If I can work at a local place that I can walk to and make enough money by mid-February, I can possibly get my charges dismissed. Still quite depressed this happened at all, but there's nowhere to go but forward now and I'm trying to come to terms with that.

so with that said I should probably stop adding music to "The Depression Playlist" I made on YouTube earlier today, yeah
